Ditto diabolix. While I jumped to the nVidia bandwagon with the release of the TNT, I'm really sorry to see 3dfx go. We need to support the underdogs! Otherwise we get another Microsoft on our hands - expensive products lacking the competition to ensure quality.

I am gonna be supporting ATi, they are the only one that can keep nVidia from becoming Microsoft.

Nvidia buying 3dfx

Post by MAC »

Hopefully, ATI will keep pushing Nvidia to perform. Like I stated elsewhere in this forum, I was looking forward to comparing the Rampage to the NV-20, now I guess I have to wait for the next version of the Radeon from ATI.

One last thing, I sure hope Brotha's family is on suicide watch.

Matrox all the way!! I still would take the G400 over any other graphic chipset... Dualhead is where it's at! And I think Matrox will reclaim the title of graphic king with the release of their G800...

*just announced* see <a href="http://www.pcabusers.net">here</a>

"Nvidia, on the heels of their aquisition of 3dfx has announced the video card for the "true" next generation of gomers. The "GeeWiz 007" will incorporate glide support and everything else on the market. Even the ability to "SLI" it somewhow to take more of your moola.

Specs include 256mb real fast ram, video in, out and under, remote control(not sure what for though), DVD support(*you must supply dvd software or hardware) and the ability to instantly fry it if it makes you mad. That way you can get another to help Nvidia pay off their bills. All this for only $899! If you get the SLI version then add another $1199 (*needs another mobo too). *please note :s oftware will be stable when we get around to it. thank you all for your loyal support :)

Definitely does not bode well for the consumer.

People keep saying that this is bad for consumers, but really 3dfx wasn't forcing nvidia to keep their prices low over the last year as far as I can tell. NVIDIA ONWED the value segment with the GF2 MX (a new phenomenon) without any real 3dfx choice until the V4 4500 was released much later. IMO the pricing of their upper end cards seems dictated by the price of fast DDR RAM and how much is on the card more than the price of 3dfx counterparts.

NVIDIA will dominate the video card market for only as long as they produce the fastest product at a reasonable price. If anything, 3dfx proved that it isn't a forgiving market segment and that you can't rest upon your laurels.

I wonder what will happen to driver support for the voodoo series? 3dfx have always been good at making drivers for their older cards, wasn't too long ago I saw a driver release for the Banshee I think.

Voodoo Drivers

Post by MAC »

According to what I've read, 3dfx is responsible for driver support for all existing Voodoo cards. Once 3dfx shuts the doors, driver support will probably be non-existent.
