Switch from @home...

Post by poop »

Well, my cable company, Insight Communications, switched from @home overnight last night. The new provider is "InsightBB". A quick traceroute showed me that I am now sitting on AT&T's broadband network. DSLReports said my download speed is unchanged (3 mbps), but my upload is now capped (128 kbps) :(

I used to have 3mpps up / 1 mbps down. I am sure going to miss it.

Anyone else here been on the AT&T network? How is the service?

Could be worse, I went from @home to comcast, 3 megs down to right now pulling 900k down, 1 meg up and now getting 80-100k, at least you kept your download.

My Comcast@Home has always been capped at 1.2M / 128K even when I was on @Home's network.

Now that I'm on Comcast's, upload/DL is the same but pings are MUCH better. Best I could do on DOD servers was 120 most of the time, now I'm seeing 45 - 75 pings and much shorter hops.

A quick trace route with reverse lookup shows that Comcast is using AT&T routers.

Overall I'm very happy.

Honestly, you can't blame them for restricting the upload stream - they don't want you running a server. And for most people 1.2/128 is MORE than ample.

I do web page design so if anyone deserves to grumble about upload speed it's me, but it still something I can live with.

@Home capped our U/L speed 3 years ago, to 128k. I sort of figured they might bump it as the slowest DSL offering still has 384k U/L but nooooo.

ATTBI has been about as good as @Home here in northern CA. I can still get a sustained 500KB download from Microsoft half the time. Their support is a bit worse: I spent 8-10 hours last week trying to get a Linksys Cable Modem in, most of that with ATTBI techs.. 4 techs, four answers / URL's to go to / etc. None of it worked. Finally took the unit back and got an RCA. Yesterday a tech from ATTBI followed up on a complaint I filed about the poor support. Turns out ATTBI took over an old Costco building about 4 miles from my house :+

She had to work with me for about 2.5 hours to get the RCA up: had to manually edit everything about my setup, even after I had accessed the URL they required and logged in. but she was good, professional ....and I have two numbers for techs in that building now :D

IF Comcast actually takes over out here I'm probably going to go satellite. The articles I have read indicate Comcast is blocking access to newsgroups it does not think we should see, is blocking VPN ports, is locking users down to T1 speeds, etc. Hopefully that is a year or two away.

They have removed newsgroup access for now, I think they are bringing it back up but with limited download caps. I don't run a vpn so I couldn't tell you there. And they claim to lock you at 1500k, I've yet to see someone actually get that though, if they factor in the overhead they could at least cap at 1700 so people then would get 1500.

Had they kept the costs the same or even lowered them cause now they don't have to pay royalties to @home I wouldn't really have a problem, but my speeds have been cut drastically, they are taking away services, and increasing the price, it is totally backwards in the computer world.

True. I occasionally read about Power companies finding ways to use power lines to provide connectivity, but it looks like it's still years out. Of coors, with the rates we are paying out here in Ca maybe we're better off with Cable Modems... ;)
