Thinking of going SCSI RAID 0, Any Advice?

Post by Darkheart »

I've got 2 IBM 10,000 RPM SCSI (U2) HDD's and was thinking of combining them together in a RAID 0 array, then using this as my main system partition (under XP Pro). Anyone had any experience of doing this ? Any advice on good SCSI RAID 0 card's? Only 1 I have seen that looks good so far is Adapatec but (obviously) is expensive (£300).

Any advice b4 getting started?

What OS do you have? Are these the only 2 HDDs in your system?

Try the forum at http://www.storagereview.com , very good people with storage related knowledge over there. You can't search much of the forums cause they lost all the data in a recent crash trying to backup their stuff :(

It looks like the common suggestion over there was to use software RAID when you have WinNT/2000/XP , there are currently no good Ultra160/LVD SCSI RAID cards that are affordable for mortals. Well, maybe an ATTO card ...

Actually there is an affordable card if you don't mind a used one. Over at Axion Tech
they are selling an Adaptec AAA-131U2 (used) with a scsi2 cable for 150$, they guarantee it not to be DOA, and these cards are pretty hardy, as we use em on our farm at work a lot. It only does 0,1,5 RAID and comes with a 2mb cache (but you can throw any old PC66 DIMM in there for up to 64mb read cache). The only down side I have with em is although it's hardware based RAID, you need to install Adaptec's server manager software to alert you to failures and what not. And no, I dont work for Axion, I just went to Pricewatch and searched for adaptec aaa 131 and they where the cheapest (buy half)

Course, I could sell you my delicious HP NetRAID 2M for cheap, but I doubt it ;-P

Thanks, all checking out the resources now, I'm going to be running Ultra 2 SCSI HDD's (68 pin LVD not wide). I have the HDD's but need a decent RAID controller.

speaking of StorageReview, read on Ars that they are going under pretty soon :( That was a great site too.

Oops, Doc Silly already posted on it, anyway.............................
