Can you say "Stupid" ?
Now I've seen and heard it all. My son brought his comp to me to look at on Saturday. It has a Slot A Athlon 700MHz. I did repairs on it several months ago. I knocked off 8 capacitors on the back side of the PCB and managed to solder them back on, 7 of then with thin wires attached. I had to solder the wires onto the caps and then onto the PCB because my hands were to shakey to solder the caps directly to the PCB. The processor has run perfect at 950MHz @ 1.8 volts with a Leufkin GFD for six months. Now the stupid part: My son moved in with his sister a couple weeks ago. He has plans on having cable put in for internet access, so he got an NIC for his comp. He has no dialup modem. So, the stupid one gets an AOL disk in the mail and while he is not home . . . . .can ya see it comin' ?
Yep, you got it. She installed AOL 7.0 and tried to use the NIC as a dial up, complete with the phone cord stuck in the NIC.
Well, that didnt work, so she thought the dip switches on the GFD would help the connection. Yep, she changed the dip switches and powered it up.Poof goes the power supply. When it wouldn't boot, she unplugged it and started messing with the processor. She managed to knock three of the capacitors loose at that point.Well, after two hours of messing with the capacitors, I managed to get them back on. Saturday night I put a big blob of RTV silicone sealer all over those tiny capacitors and wires. I also put the back of the Slot A case back on and superglued it on. Now it is running at 950MHz @ 1.8v. He leaves the case off all the time, it is so damned dirty inside the case. He says it over heats real bad with the case on. I have the case all closed up and it is running at 96ºF with SiSoft Sandra Burn-in Wizard running. In my opinion, that is not hot at all. All in all, some people should not be allowed in the same room as a computer. )*

OMG.... sounds just as computer illiterate as my mother, although luckily my mother knows not to touch stuff... she just yells for me whenever something happens: "Matt!!!! The screen went black and now there's this weird colorful thingy waving on the screen! It goes away when I move the mouse; what is it?!?!"
Man, if she tried to do stuff on her own I wouldn't have a computer for more than 3 days...

Every so often I try to masturbate a large word into my conversation, even if I'm not sure what it means.

AMD Ph II X4 955 BE 3.2 @ 3.8 GHz | Scythe SCSMZ-2000 | ASRock 880GMH/USB3 | 8 GB G.Skill DDR3 1600 | Radeon HD5670 | Kingston 128GB SSD
Hey, I kept the case too. I plan on using as a window cut-out template for a new case window. It's the perfect size.Originally posted by VidmanII
