OT: Give-away - WE HAVE A WINNER!!!
hehehheh
okay people
try to top this stupid incident as a NEWBIE(im lying)heheh) to modding and adding
i started off modding my p3~! yea pentium 3's!!!
anyways, i had just gotten a geforce vid card with heat sink and fan
the fan had the three prong power supply cord so i was like ok
i guess all i hafta do is plug it into a 3 prong place and the fan will work. I opened
my case to see the top two taken by processor and rear fan i had modded in
then i look down, and see another three wit this black thing on it
so i was like. "!!YES!!" and moved the black thing covering two prongs
then i put the fan plug on them and i started up the comp
' why the computer was not starting up '??? i was like WTFF!!!!
the comp just kept beeping...im like holy shi7....
i was at my comp restarting it like 20 times...and thinking
why the hell wont it work
so i change my old vid and plug it back in...and it STILL DOESNT WORK!!
i then look at hte fan plug...then i knock myself in hte balls becuz i read...BIOS CONFIG
i put that black piece of crap onto the bios config settings
and long and behold, the comp started nicely
final thought: what idiot confuses the bios with a 3 prong fan plug???!!!
hehe, well that's never gonna happen to me again!
thanks for listening~

LOL! That comment about the Pinto made me remember a few other incidents...
1. (Semi-OT, but it has something to do with electronics at least) I took an Electronics class back in middle school (the equivalent of woodshop I guess) and one of our projects was to make a box that would randomly light up one of two LEDs when a button was pressed. I had most of the soldering done on my PCB and was in the process of cutting off the excess leads with a pair of needlenose pliers. As I was about to snip one off, I heard the guy next to me say something like "Hey, let's see if it works!", and I watched him plug it into the overhead outlet...
BZZZZZRT! The thing threw off a great shower of sparks, and I landed flat on my butt on the floor... The surge burned a large black spot into the middle of my PCB, and fused the pliers to it.
Thank god they had plastic handles...
2. When I was a student tech on campus at school, I was at work one day just screwing around on one of our machines until I was officially on the clock... I noticed Brian (one of the other techs) come in but didn't pay attention to what he was doing. Apparently he switched on a machine and did some stuff for a few minutes, then turned it off and proceeded to gut it for parts. For some bizarre reason, he'd opened the PS up and had it laying on the table behind him. A minute later one of our other techs comes in and starts searching for something on the table. He tried to move what was left of the Mac and stuck his hand right into the PS...
He danced around in mortal pain for a while and spent the next 10 minutes cursing Brian for leaving the PS open...

I have one for ya!!!!!
DaveJ- (about knocking over your case) That's funny because.....
.....Okay, a little background info. I have this problem with leaving things on the top of my car and driving away. I usually do this after cross country practice when I am carrying my shoes to the car. I just place them on the roof to open the door and sometimes I drive off.
Well, I was goin to a friends house one weekend about a year ago and I wanted to bring my computer so we could connect them and get our multiplayer on. Well, I went out to my car and put my computer on top of it (first mistake), opened the door, got in, cranked the car, drove about 5 feet and I heard something hit my roof hard. I thought, "shew, I am lucky. At least it didn't fall to the ground". So then I proceeded to brake (second mistake), the computer slid dow the front windsheild and off to the left side of the car. I couldn't believe that such a thing actually happened.
This one cost me a case, hdd, and the new kenwood 62x. Luckily, I was able to get the hdd and cr-rom replaced though.
Hey my first post in this forum. I came here initially becaused I got trolled by Matt Whitaker who is now on the troll list. Thanks PCAbusers; hopefully he won't scam anybody else, but I doubt it.

Ok, here goes.
About a year ago, I built my first custom rig. P3 800, Abit SE-6, and a decent video card and HD. I finally got everything working properly, but a month later I noticed something was wrong with my floppy drive. A disk just would not fit in there! I was confused, and wondering what had happened, I took it out and took it apart. Inside, I found about 5 dollars in change! Turns out my 8 year old sister had tried to "buy" something online, after hearing my dad and I talking about stuff that we had ordered online and saved a bunch of money, and she thought that the floppy drive was kind of like the slot in a vending machine. So she stuck a bunch of quarters and dimes in there, but when whatever she "ordered" (some cheap toy, think it was) didnt magically come out of the computer, she thought she might get in trouble, so she didnt tell anyone. My dad and I pissed ourselves laughing, but I had to buy a new floppy drive.

Welcome to the machine.
Hey Peter, I haven't forgotten you guys. Good to see that you are still ticking, bud.
Sorry, it's been a hectic year for me and I had to back off from the online trading. I haven't upgraded any of my computers for a year, if that tells you anything. I hope I can come by more often from now on. I miss you guys. Good luck to the best story!
OMG!!! Emo!!! Thanks for dropping by bud, ya made my day
. Hope you're doing okay man, it's been way too long since I've seen ya around here...WWAAAAAAAYYYYYY too long. You don't have a funny story???
And for the stories...keep 'em coming!!!
rogue - that's a great story with your sister dropping the money in the floppy slot
.
joey_rjm5 - I can only imagine the pain on your face when you realized what was happening with that PC sliding off...ouch!!! And as for your first post here, it's a good one so now just continue on posting and I can personally tell ya that this bunch of hardware addicts is the best one that you can find on the net. I have actually met and made friends with several of these great traders and I do feel that no other site has a better group of traders around. I also think this forum is one of the safest around because it's run by people that don't mess around. Sure, nothing is totally safe and some trust is necessary - but by using common sense and all the tools available to you to check out a trader's history you can greatly minimize the risk(s) that you take with trading online.
triska - "what idiot confuses the bios with a 3 prong fan plug???!!!"
Why would you want to pose that question here after that story? hehe
- just kidding of course!!!

My Daughter@3 years old
Imagine my horror when I came home from the store and my child is sitting at my computer banging away at the key board and there's no life left in the poor machine. She managed to ruin a brand new harddrive. "Look Daddy, me working on the computer." Wasn't funny at the time..
The time I was trying to put an extra usb port on my brand new Abit VT6X4..Fired up the machine looked down and thought wow I didn't know there were led's on the mother board. Only to see that the led's was the mother board frying..Not funny at the time either.

Well, I am a regular at overclockers.com and I was introduced to this site after getting scammed. I think I will be coming here a lot more often to deal with trading. Thanks for having me.

You want 2 stories, here are 2 of my favorites.
Several years back, working as a hardware tech, we had lots of computers to work on. The one that I was currently working on had a bad power supply, so I went off to replace the power supply. It was one of those nice AT ones with the 4 plugs to go into the switch on the front of the pc. Anyway, the plugs didn't quite fit nicely onto the pins, so I left and went to lunch. The guy called about the pc while I was away, and one of the other techs attempted to find out what was wrong with it, and how long it would be until it was repaired, so he plugged it in. I get back from lunch, and try to pinch the power supply adapters onto the pins with a nice pair of needlenose pliers, without checking to see if it was plugged in. ZAP! I unplug the pc, and set it on the floor. The guy that plugged it in while I was gone sees me do all this, and says "That'll work better if you unplug it". Thanks.
A couple more years back than that, I was trying to upgrade my 486 with cache chips that were spares from work. The old fashioned, 16K type that you have to plug in one right next to the other. I turn on the pc, and look at the monitor. Bios message said YOU HAVE INSTALLED BAD CACHE MEMORY. TURN OFF THE PC NOW. I look down, and there's smoke billowing out of my computer. That was the last message that motherboard ever gave me. Nothing like a little electrical fire.
Hope everyone's entertained by my stories of electricity. Kids, don't try that at home.

LastKnight, that one story reminds me of another time in Autoshop when I was removing the sparkplug wires from the sparkplugs on this Toyota Corolla and the idiot in the car decides that it was funny to try to start the stupid thing while I'm holding the ratchet in one hand and the sparkplug wire in the other...needless to say it really, really, really wasn't that funny to me - quite shocking really
Alright, gotta add my 2 cents
Well, this isn't exactly building a computer but real close. I had the dream 18year olds job. I was the manager of an arcade! Well I also had to fix the broken machines. You guys will probably remember the motorcycle game HangOn, we had the big version that you sit on the plastic motorcycle an tilt back and forth to steer. Well anyhow, the monitor died after being racked around too much and needed to be replaced. So to get the monitor out, you need to discharge the capacitors in it so you don't get elecrocuted. There are TWO. I discharged ONE and took the monitor out replaced it with a new one and got the game up and running. A bit later, not paying much attention, I got to pack up the old one to ship out. I reach down to grab the monitor and BAM! I'm thrown against the wall with my arms above my head and my hair looking like Carrot Top's (I had long hair at the time). I seem to have touched the cap lead for the high voltage(60,000) cap that I forgot to discharge. Ooops. I couldn't put my left arm down for about a half hour because my muscles were stuck and was sore for about a week. Needless to say I don't forget to discharge things anymore.
.
Whoohooo.....I made the list.
Well, my first real computer was a Packard Bell 75mhz with 8mb of rams.
Couldn't play Crusader:NO remorse so I bought 2 8megs at COMPUSA for a bargain price of $179.99 each. I think the $360 on my COMPUSA CC cam to about $500 by the time I did finish paying it off.
OH.....you're looking for funniest story, not stupiest story....damm
Anyway, I like the computer camp story the best.....leaves it to your imagination.

Hey old buddy, good to see you here too.
How's the weather in Florida? Anyway, I just remembered what an idiot I was back in the old days. A long time ago, when a 386SX-20 NEC cost $3000, I was inspired to upgrade it with a whole 4MB memory. Lo and behold, some friend said he had some 2MB sticks and offered to give them to me. Eager as I was, I popped up the case, found the empty memory slots, and jammed the memory somehow into it. The result was a slight burning smell and a gone computer. It turned out my friend forgot that the memory was for Macs and I was too clueless to see the difference then.
How about a smelly story? Last year my wife started to enjoy watching TV on my computer and with that usually come refreshments. Well, one time she accidentally spilled some milk on the case and quickly cleaned it, but was afraid to tell me.
Needless to say, in less than 24hours there was a horrible smell from the milk that seeped inside the case. My wife still watches the TV, from a distance.
