What is the utility of choice for backup and recovery? Since I had so much trouble reformating I thought I'd try one. Looking for one that if you screw up something that it will allow you to return to the day before or week before. Any advice appreciated.

Get Norton Ghost. It is a lifesaver. I made a ghost image of Win98SE with only the graphics card installed and a ghost image of Win98SE with everything installed. When I want a fresh start I use the first image. Only takes a couple of minutes to have a fresh Windows install rather than 45 minutes to install Win98 from the CD.

Norton ghost it is
I'll buy it today. I would rather use it before I start adding games. Also, is there any anti-virus software that everyone prefers, at the moment I'm just using the evaluation version of Protector Plus 2000. Thanks for the replies.

While I swear by most Norton products, I've had problems with Norton Anti-Virus.
It's corrupted some Windows installations on me, caused excessive network traffic (why, I don't know, but in two cases now I've run into a problem where running NAV on a system that's running apps from a server will reduce the bandwidth to nothing).
I don't really like the way Norton products like NAV and Norton Utils attaches itself intimately to the Windows GUI (in the case of Norton Utils, though, I only install NDD and Speedisk and none of the background apps, which works fine - Norton System Doctor in particular is a major resource hog).
Symantec also was rather embaressed that NAV had trouble detecting the SirCam virus (Hi How Are You) as attachments to emails, which probably led to the ratehr explosive spread of that particular virus.
Norton also want a yearly subscription for virus updates (not much, like $5 annually) while McAfee gives them for free, although they want a fee for the more convenient auto update feature - but it's hardly a hassle to go to their site and download the latest DAT file patch.
I've used both, but I prefer McAfee Virus Scan.
