yes, it's a 3 dvd set (2 w/episodes and 1 w/ bonus material).

it is not digitally remastered...so it looks like a VHS recording. :(
the sound is pretty weak also.

other complaint: they left in the commercial break clips... "we will return after these messages"

besides all that, well, it's robotech...so it's cool. :)

Hey, come on. If they left out the commercial break cuts it just wouldn't be Robotech. :) That is the only way the show ever aired in English. Also, the quality is mediocre at best but, it's about as good as you'll ever get. Robotech was only the third japanese animated series (that I know of) to make it to the US and they (Harmony Gold) basically had to invent most of the processes that make good translation work possible. They chopped up original episodes from three different series and created something like 84 episodes in just 4 months. At $30 for the set ($12.95 each DVD) it's definately worth adding to a collection, but don't compare it to modern anime because it just doesn't come close.

The only thing that truly bothered me about the set is that fact that they left in the opening/closing credits for EVERY EPISODE. For the love of Pete people, spend a little money editing, and just have them at the beginning and end of the DVD.

Sheesh.

or have it as an option in the start up. some people only have say 20min a day to spare watching a show..they would find this really nice I would suspect..but dopes like me who watched the whole first disk today do find it annoying. :)

If you're a big fan of macross you might want to check this out:
http://www.animeigo.com/Products/macross.html

Note its NOT Robotech. Its the original Macross series from japan that Robotech used and changed around to fit the 1st part of their series. These ones WILL be digitally enhanced(see pic). It wont be dubbed either. Only subtitled which is the way purists prefer it anyways. Its not cheap but it should be worth it when it comes out. I can't wait.

I'm still deciding on whether I should get the Robotech box sets. Anyone know how long it will be between box sets? I just bought all 6 Cowboy Bebop DVDs and couldn't be happier for the moment. :D

Purists be damned, I want my anime dubbed. What is the point of watching an animated flick if you are too absorbed in reading the subtitles to see the actual animation?

I agree to a certain degree. Its no fun having to read subtitles when you'd rather be watching the wonderful drawing and action on the screen. It also make it harder to understand the movie sometimes also.

For robotech it was always dubbed since robotech is the american version of 3 different unrelated japanese series. For macross though, the story will be different since its the series the way it originally came out, and they didn't want to dub it since it would be confusing to have 2 different dubbed macross series running around. People would mistake it for robotech. I think thats understandable.

Now for subtitling in general, well there are benefits to them. Voice acting is a BIG deal in japan. Voice actors are like celebrities there from what I hear and they take it real seriously. If you compare voice acting of a dubbed anime verses the original japanese one you'll see how much more effort is put in by the japanese voice actors. Sometimes characters are even designed with specific voice actors in mind to play the role. You loose this when its dubbed. It can ruin a character. You may not understand the words coming out of his mouth but you definitly get the expression from the character. Dubbing dulls it down and can sometimes ruin the series.

Personally I don't really like the way Spike(in Cowboy Bebop) is played in the dubbed. It just doesn't "sound" like him. It doesn't seem right. The japanese voice actor did a great job of portraying who he was which was lost in the dub. I hate elitists but many times dubs can really hurt a series and shouldn't be done. Just my opinion.

I just deal with the US voises so I can actually pay attention to the movie....it is liek whe nthey change voises i nthe middle of a series like DBZ is when it gets really annoying. But I just get over it and am happy with the English. I have the 3 macross dvd's the first 2 are a sreies and the third is a movie. the Cowboy bebop isnt to bad. his voise matches the music..they jsut should have made that series Longer...Most the stuff has nothgn to do with anything else. Gundam wing, Lain, the Street Fighter series, among others I find done really well...even battle athletes Victory. :)
