Bandit workgroups???

Post by glassoftea »

Hey gang,

I've got three workgroups under networking that I never set up. The only thing I can think of is that when I was playing around with my IBM wireless adapters it set them up?? OR, since I am on a cable modem, am I seing other workgroups on the system due to a badly set up cable modem system?
If so, can they see me?

The only local workgroup I use is showing up fine, the default workgroup, but then I have these three:

Dekd.com- a web site for a computer company in my area

Tekquest.com- a web site for a digital publisher in the MD area

and

Wscatv - a web site with chinese on it, can't tell where it is.

So, what do you guys think???

win2000 sometimes adds FTP sites to my network neighborhood after i'm finished browsing them.

i have to delete them to get them to go away, or right click and "disconnect". i never wanted them to be a persistent connection...so it may be some default setting somewhere.

???

i doubt they can see you, however.

Are you sure these are actual workgroups and not just links to previous destinations? I've found that if I visit a site (mostly FTP)several times in a brief period of time, Windows is kind fo enough to place a shortcut in my networking stuff. Not sure, but could be an answer.
On a long enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

interesting - could it be that the wireless gear looks for local networks? i remember an article about how the hackers like to ride around silicon valley and other wireless network intensive areas hacking into systems with wireless lan notebooks -

HAHA,

This is too funny,

I have caused quite a stir locally! I contacted the two websites that I was able to see the workgroups for and got a call about three minutes after I sent the emails. The head networking fella at my cable modem company was wanting to know what the heck was going on. I told him what I could see and that I am worried about the security of my computers on my home area lan

(i've heard em called hans for home area network, will that catch on?)

even though I am using a firewall and have all the bindings set up to provide the most security. He said he could not see me on his end but wanted to know how I had my lan setup. I told him how I had the cable modem running right into the 4 port hub (playing dumb like I didn't know not too) and he kind of got a little irritated, telling me how I was violating the TOS since I had multiple IP's and only pay for one. So, looks like they are renting bandwidth to a couple of commercail sites and I am seeing there workgroups due to my setup. Of course I'm heading out to Staples to pick up a linksys router as I'm not taking any chances with my lan being wide open to any other yahoo on the WAN that HSA provides. I do think it's funny though how fast that guy called me. You know he got some hysterical calls after I started emailing!

another mystery solved.
