Quick question about FC Celeron and HS/Fan

Post by Naeb »

I have been running a Celeron 366@550, but I'm upgrading to a FC 566@850. Can I use the same GlobalWin HS/Fan that I was using on the 366, or do I need to get a different type for the FlipChip?

Thanks!

Welcome to PCA :)

I believe most will work with both if the 366 you have is socket370. If it's slot 1 then you'll need a new one along with a slotket. Do you know which model you have? Just in case a good low cost alternative is the golden orb, you can usually find one around 10 in the fs forum and about that at some online retail stores.

Thanks for the response. It is a Socket 370 (I'm using the same board . . . Abit BM6). I just wasn't sure if there was a special HS/Fan needed for a flipchip. I don't remember what model the HS/Fan is, but it is all black, and has a 2 ball bearing fan (GlobalWin). The HS is roughly the same height as the fan. Anyway, it sounds like it will work.

Thanks!

some of the old fans work on the flipchips but beware the ones that don't have the little feet or spacers at the 4 corners - the old chips hasve the flat plate and the heatsink is designed to exert pressure all the way across - if you put that on a flipper you can end up with expesive dust and keychain ! check some of the retail sites and look at the pictures and see if your hs works on the flippers - a lot of people crushed their cpus when these first came out -

I might know the fan you are talking about. you might want to make sure that there isnt a thin piece of metal that comes down between where the cpu and the tail end of the socket come togeather. on some of the Older global win heatsinks that was and is to long for flip chips as they are Shorter then ppga chips. so make sure the heatsink is Fluxh on the chip. Other wise it should be fine. Nice up grade. Enjoy it.

Actually, it is exactly the one that Nexus_7 described. Oh well, I guess it's time to look for a Golden Orb now <grin> . . . over to the For Sale/Trade forum.

thanks guys!

I would see if you can get a Volcano 2 over a goldenorb any day. they cost about the same but the volcano2 cools Much better. KDcomputers.com sells them and newegg.com sells it for less but I think shipping is more. Glad I could help. :)

Cooler

Post by Crazyace »

You can use old 370 coolers but you need a copper shim. Go get one at http://www.3dfxcool.com
They are about 10 bucks, and keep the heatsink level..

You wouldn't by chance be in the market to buy one that can already do 850mhz would you>?

I am looking to upgrade myself..

It may work depending on the face lip

Post by blackhawk »

My GW fdp wouldn't work as the newer celerons sit lower on the socket so the hs contacts the lip of the plastic socket. A simple solution I found was to take the hs to a machine shop and have them shave a bit off and put a higher lip on the edge. They didn't even charge me.

Those 533's are an 800 guarantee. Never heard of one that didn't make it to 100mz. Mine did 896!
