I like DVDs with sharp special effects and good use of 5.1 sound (I've got an HT setup). For example, ID4, T2, Jurassic Park, etc, etc...
Also, a lot of special features is a nice bonus, two of them that stand out for me are ID4 and T2.

For me it is extras. I like the outtakes, and the production notes. I also like the extra scenes in the directors cut versions. A great example of this is th Abyss Special Edition. It has both the Theatrical version, and the directors cut. It also has a making of.

I rarely look at the extras more than once. I do watch themovies over and over again. So for me, it is simply being a good movie. The quality of the transfer/audio comes second to the film's quality. Director/Writer/Producer commentary is always a small bonus, but unneccesary.

So for me, a DVD is a must own if I like the movie.

All these 2 disc sets and stuff seem like a waste. eg, I have fight club, and I think it has the best 'feature' disc I have ever seen. How many times have I seen it? Once. They can always make a single 2-sided disc, but the film companies never do. I guess the '2 disc set' label is a big selling point.

Now that's what I am talking about.

I usually keep a copy if I really like the movie. Some movies may be great but if I know I will definitely not watch it again, then it's a no buy.

The extra stuff is a plus but not exactly a dvd no-buy killer.

The movie also has to be widescreen or its a no-go. No pan and scan crap.

Extra stuff is nice to have but how many of us actually watch that more than once. It's how we like da movie. Many I can watch over and over or at least once a year and some have scenes I like to watch again. Wide screen is preferred but if all that's available is full screen then I'll still get it. But I'd trade it as soon as i can get a wide screen or it becvomes available. Fortunately most are wide screen now.

Agreed. extras are nice, but i don't have a lot of time. if i have a spare 2 hours, i'd rather watch a movie before watching a full-length commentary by the filming and lighting crew.

i appreciate extras that add to the movie, sometimes extras feel more like fillers.

i am so behind i have about 30 dvds that are still sealed, and waiting in my queue to be watched.

i'll take anamorphic widescreen and 5.1 sound anyday over extras.

Wow, you can actually afford to buy 30 DVD's and not watch them? I need to graduate so I can start making real money. Being a student sucks.

DEFINITION of a DVD to own!

Post by Zak33 »

There can be only one definition of a really top DVD to buy, with your own cash, for you to keep for ever!

When, after a few beers in the evening, you think to yourself, "I would like to see that film, but I am tired now, so I will have tomorrow off work SICK, cos frankly, the film is so good it deserves my time, and my quite respectable job doesn't, at least not tomorrow!

that's it, really!
A little crazy, but safe enough

actually, i was, until recently, a starving student on a tight budget. if you hung out at dvdtalk over the last 2 years, there were some unbelievable bargains (that have since dried up).

I think the last time i bothered calculating, i spent an average of 4.50/dvd. now a days, i'll go for anything under $8.
