Just installed Win2k....

Post by PreDatoR »

There anything i need to know since i'm a newbie with Win2K? Everything so far acts like its going good. Haven't tried to play any 3D games yet. Just tryin' to get everything setup and rolling smooth first. Any good tweak sites for Win2k? And does it take Win2k longer to load than 98se. It seemed like it took it forever to load and also shutdown seems slow. Thought i'd ask since i know the majority around here runs 2k.

Those boot times are normal. But why are you even shutting down in the first place? I've been running for over a month w/out a reboot.

I just loaded this about about 4-5 hours ago. Noticed it was slow when i had to reboot to get drivers to install and such.

make sure you install service pack 2 -

otherwise the only time you'll need to reboot is when you try to overclock!

directx8 is specific to winnt/2k and win9x. So you have to get the win2k one :)

Ok thanks Frost i was wonderin' about that. I spoke too soon, i can't get my burner to work? Nero just says its a scsi/ide error. The drive works to read from just don't write. Anyone got any idea's. It works fine when i jump over to 98 so i know its gotta be a driver or something in 2k server that the burner ain't liking.

PreDatoR, I couldn't get my TDK VeloCD Burner to work on my system either. It was a long time ago when I tried but I haven't tried ever again.

Jsut out of curiosity, do any of those tweaks mentioned in that articla at Ars actualyl improve performance a bunch? What I mean is, will implementing those tweaks give much improved performance or are we talking about a few clock cycles? I don't think I want to go digging through my registry for a few cycles per one million, know what I mean? Any input would be appreciated! :)

also a nifty feature of win2k that makes shutting down faster, just press the power button on your comp once for a quicker shutdown. booting after driver installs takes longer than a normal boot too. other than that get the sp's and ur ready to go
