What could be wrong ?

Post by Kazer »

I set my 1Ghz THunderbird to 9 x 150, vcore 1.85

Played games for a couple hours, ran F@H for a couple hours, and did both at the same time with no problem.

It just suddenly freezes without warning, once I finished playing my game and then opened IE and it froze. Another time it froze when I opened VIA hardware monitor.

What could be wrong if it can run games and F@H for hours et can't do the simple stuff once and a while?

first thing I'd do is back off the ram settings if you have them at 2,2,2. See if that fixes the freezes. If not start dropping back a notch on the FSB. Just cause it ran a couple hours, don't mean it's stable at that speed. Just a couple things to consider.........

i've heard that some of those new fangled mobos can't stay up at those insane speeds without a fan on the mobo chipset - also what seth said - i had my tbird at 1.0 at 1.265 1/85 folding for days - thenit just seized up. i set it back to 1.1 1.8 v no problem - now it's happy at 1.2 @ 1.8 - usually it's heat - also does the ram get enough airflow?

sethpa, I've set it at Cas 3 with all the memory speed settings off

wvjohn, my mobo came with a heatsink fan on the chipset.

I dunno if the ram gets enough air flow or not, I have a pretty good modified case. 2 120MM fans for intake.

I guess I'll have to try buying some new ram and a new heatsink for my cpu as well as a better heatsink fan for my chipset.

Kazer, so bumping it back helped or not? If you dropped it back to 133 , set the ram to slowest settings, have got decent temps and it's still acting up, you got something else going on. It sounds like you got plenty of air in the case with those fans. One other thing you might try, if using 2 sticks of ram, pull one and try it single, then try the other. Could be one stick is better than the other. Push them both individually to faster settings. See where they crap out.

sethpa, I originally tested it with Cas3 and speed settings off. The freezes seem very random, I'm thinking maybe my motherboard doesn't like it very much.

I just ordered 2 sticks of Tonicom PC160 256MB SDRAM, Thermaltake Memory Cooling Kit (to cool down the Tonicom ram), and a Blue Orb for my mobo chipset to replace the heatsink fan that came with it.

I'm also about to order a Millennium Glaciator , this new heatsink looks good. Also I'm about to buy those new Thunderbird 1.33Ghz 266FSB AYHJA Y Stepping and see how that does.

If this doesn't help me reach my goal I don't know what will. I'll probably trash the mobo anyways when the Abit KG7-Raid comes out.

Wonder how fast a 1.7Ghz THunderbird will fold, I've been hearing that the 1.33Ghz 266FSB AYHJA Y Stepping clock up to around there.

I just wish I knew how to make a water cooling rig
