Another school shooting

SANTEE, Calif. (AP) -- A 15-year-old freshman opened fire at his high school on Monday, killing two youths and wounding 13 other people, authorities said. One witness said the youth smiled as he fired.

One person was dead at the scene and 14 others were injured, Santee Fire Department spokesman Jeff Fehlberg said. Later, a second victim died at Grossmont Hospital. It was the largest number of dead and wounded in a school shooting since the Columbine tragedy nearly two years ago.

Both of the dead were juveniles, and at least two of those shot were campus supervisors at Santana High School, Sheriff William Kolender said.

Student John Schardt said he was in a nearby classroom when the shooting started at about 9:20 a.m. in a nearby boys room. "I looked at the kid, and he was smiling and shooting his weapon," said Schardt, 17.

"It was total chaos. People were trying to take cover," Schardt said.

Neil O'Grady, 15, said the suspected gunman had talked to him and other friends over the weekend about a shooting at the school, but they thought he was joking.

"He was telling us how he was going to bring a gun to school ... but we thought he was joking," O'Grady said. "We were like, 'Yeah, right."'

The suspect recently had two skateboards stolen from him, O'Grady said. "He always gets picked on; he's scrawny, he's little," O'Grady said. "People think he's dumb."

More at the link. What the heck is causing these shootings. They never happened when I went to school. Nor did any schools have metal detectors as you entered school.

Very tradgic indeed. I have always been pro gun but something has got to be done to keep guns out of the hands of kids in our schools. Sure wish I knew the answer. I am afraid if we outlaw guns that only outlaws will have them. Damn it just makes me sick and frustrated because I have no idea how to stop this from happening again.

lack of morles, lack of seeing beyond the present, and shit ass parents along with shit ass communities including tv. I remember I was drivign home from Indiana and was in downtown chicago when I was hearing about the Columbine. I actually cried. this shit is just pathetic and now they are gana try some More stupid shit like makign More useless gun rules and other stuff that doesnt help. To bad he didnt turn the gun on him self.

The only way to stop this is get those big fat ****ers to stop bullying other kids... I mean, WTF is the point in push kids smaller than you around? I think it's TV and movies that's encouraging those "bigger" kids to bully others, they always have those damn fat **** who push other kids around in TV/movies, so those bigger kids started doing it themselves in reality... I think it all started in "Back to the Future" as far as I can remember, then tons of other TV shows and movies followed that pattern...

This is just sick, and those kids who bully other should really learn from this... or they will be next IMO!

I think it is how this society now views life and treats it with little value now. Abortion, racial slurs, how every misbehavior is somebody elses fault, no one take responsability for themselves. It sickens me. It depresses me as well. I went through a lot of humiliation in elementary school because of my economic background and I got through it without needing to take it out on anyone. Life is not fair. Deal with it. Just make the best of it with what you can.

if all schools where like my old one i dont think there would be ne school problems like this

we had metal detectors and police patrolin the halls

you had to have a pass to leave the class rooms and every one had student id's
if you had no id you where not allowd in the school

The solution starts at home with the parents, teaching their kids right from wrong and being there to talk to them and find out if they are having problems and listen to what they have to say. The schools have some responsibility as well in teaching the values of the community in which the kids live in. There is no clear cut answer but it must start at home with family values, and with 1/2 if all marriages ending in divorce nowadays I got a feeling it will get worse before it gets better.

Hammer, I totaly agree with you. What you had to say is the gist of Hilary Rodham-Clinton's book "It Takes A Village". With such a large amount of dysfunctional families everyone realy does need to get involved with our children of today. Teen shootings was the very topic of a news program last night. The final conclusion I drew from the show was that most of the children that resort to gun violence are just crying out for attention. There are more and more teen groups against violence popping up, I just hope they form quicker than the teen violence does.

Give every student a gun when they enter the school. Almost like a library book and then let's see if there are anymore shootings. Fight fire with fire. Of course I'm joking, but this shit is getting ridiculous.

Guess what will be next? They will blame it on the games they play. It's never the fault of the parents.

Crazy. Never had stuff like this when I was in school either and I've only been out 11 years. Plenty of fistfights but not even the worst kid would think about bringing in a gun and shooting people. I don't know what the answer is, but I know good parenting will only take you so far. I was brought up very well, but I still hung out with the wrong crowd. I was lucky and woke up though and finally realized what my parents were saying. Unfortunately not everyone has an epiphany; kids always think they know everything and never realize the ramifications of their actions. Not until its too late anyway

Peer pressure, being made fun of and picked on by bullies can make a kid break yes, but heck not kill another because of immature actions. It's up to the parents and school counselors to make sure that doesn't happen with talks to a kid to see what's going on. I don't think many counselors do a good enough caring job with each kid and probably just don't have the time for it unfortunately. Parents working a lot maybe simply ask how is everything and the kids says "fine" just to shut them up and that may be all they ever ask.

These kids seeing others do it, that puts the idea in their head too. Better ways of talking to kids may help, I wish I had the answer.

Gosh wish I had an answer.. Didn't know about this till signing on.

Myself, I was raised by my Grandparents. Grandma was sweetheart with grandpa being very strict and I got an ass whooping over the littlest things from him. He taught me respect that I will never forget. He did it in a good way though.. A warning and screw up agian thats it!! (AN ass paddling.. no hitting) Same with school. Yeah mess up and got the paddle (with them holes in it) By the principel!
We had Tuesday school for prayer for an hour or two at the church (yes during school hours!)

I have to beleive its the way parents handle thier children overall.. Grandma always talked to me before the ass whippin and after and why it had to be. I love them both today and wouldnt change a thing if I could. (gramps is gone though..

)

It that it though? The parents? Somethimes I woulder if it's so much more. Overcrowding, religion, and the list goes on and on.

It's just so sad to hear this.....
