Damn BSOD's

I just installed win95 on a 486DX4 100Mhz. 20mb (1 4mb 72pin SIMM 70ns, 4 30pin 70ns) ram, 853mb HD. Runs cold, tried it w/ just the vid card and IDE HD Controller and still does it. Tried taking out the 72 pin and it still does it. If i take out any of the 30's i will get a long beep that will repeat and no post. This is on a clean install. BSOD's right after the network logon, or right before when i have the turbo button on. Never actually get to see any icons on the desktop or the taskbar or anything. Doesnt happen in 3.11.

Why not put 3.11 back on it then?

Remind me again my you are putting together a 486 nox please.

Well i got it for free from my friend and figured what the hell why not use it as a firewall for the rest of my lan. I kinda want win95 cuz there is no good software for win 3.11

Win95 as a firewall solution? That's a good one. Why not install Linux? It's more secure and you don't need to buy any additional firewall software.

30 pin memory MUST be installed in groups of 4- that's why you can't pull just one.

Mixing 72 pin and 30 pin is a recipe for disaster on some mobos. Pull either all the 30 pin or the one 72 pin and see if it behaves.

Ram was not as standardized back then as it is now. Many 486 systems used one of 3 or 4 different types of memory. I've had lot's of hassles with memory on 486 systems.

Make sure you have the BIOS set for standard default settings.

Also the 486/100 required a heatsink - make sure you've got one on there.

I agree tho, put NT or Linux on this box.. as they both run fairly well on older machines like this.

But seriously, put NT4 or Linux on there. Even if you DO get Win95 working, most firewall programs aren't going to run on a 486 even if it is windows 95.

U think? I kinda just wanted to put zonealarm on there. Maybe wingate to share my connection. Well i'd rather just take suggestions on how to get it to work, not to use linux or NT. I've already tried pulling the 72 pin one but to no avail. Thansk

Thanks alot Kakerot for keeping your opinions to yourself. What the hell does that mean anyway?

You could also look at buying a hardware firewall solution. They can be expensive but they're easier to configure.
