I've been reading a book about Batman and Nerd Culture called The Caped Crusade, and they mentioned this short film being part of the nerd culture desire to return to a darker, purer Batman after the horrendous "Batman and Robin" movie, which ultimately inspired the studio into going with Christopher Nolan's take on the Dark Knight.
