Thoughts on Jackless phones?

Post by FlyingPenguin »

I'm not an iPhone user, but sadly, leaked photos show the next Nexus wil likely also eliminate the headphone jack.

In the case of Apple, I think it's ridiculous to have to pay, probably, a premium for a lightning adapter dongle. With other phones it will all be standard USB-C at least, but I hate having to carry dongles.

I was going to wait for the new Nexus, but I may buy a Moto X Pure and defer the nightmare for another 3 years. Maybe by then we'll just have phones hardwired into our brains :)

To be honest, I rarely listen to music, books or podcasts on my phone - I have a couple of Touch iPods for that, but i do sometimes watch videos on the phone, and I like hardwired Apple buds as headsets for the phone.

I despise Bluetooth. Not a fan of the quality and its unreliable. I've never owned any kind of Bluetooth device that didn't randomly disconnect. Nor do I want to worry about charging something else.

Sigh...

Another thought: with lightning or USB, the headphone becomes one more hackable device. Buy cheap headphones from China, and have your phone powned. Not so far fetched in the Snowden era.

And phones are already thin enough, so thats a bogus excuse. I'd actually prefer a slightly thicker phone if you double my battery life.

Have "Courage" to pay $159 for Airpods.

I'm not an Apple user either. Dealing with iTunes when the wife get a new phone makes me want to throw things. I'm currently on a Samsung S5. While the DAC isn't the greatest, it sounds good enough for an all in one device. Like you, I despise Bluetooth. I've yet to ever get the UConnect to work in the Wife's Van with her iPhone. I streamed audio to my laptop just to see how it worked and I thought it sounded terrible. You're also running down your battery by broadcasting.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a 3.5 mm jack other than Apple can't sell their overpriced headphones and adapters. Good audio doesn't have to be expensive and phones don't need to be paper thin. Most people throw their iPhones into Otterboxes anyway.

all about the $$. new wireless standard to replace bluetooth, fancy earbuds with a 4 hour charge. I have an older Iphone and I use a Logitech BT headset which works just fine, and cost about $50.

They are just scrambling for ways to make moolah. Can't wait until someone loses one earbud and has to pay $159 for a new pair.

edit: the comments about the new features in comments sections around the web are very funny. "I was hoping apple would do something to make it harder to use your phone in the car...no more bluetooth to the car. I was hoping for a smaller thinner headphone adapter that would break easily. I can't wait to use my airbuds in a crowd so I can hear what other people are listening to if my phone is off. etc.

I agree with this comment:
One word...profit.

That is the ONLY reason. They can use a proprietary (Apple Only) interface to help drive accessory sales. This keeps the money with Apple because they can charge for access. Wireless, needs an Apple chip. Wired, now it needs an Apple chip. They have long desired to get rid of the headphone jack because it is an open standard. Something that Apple hates because they can't monetize it. Not only that, but by being proprietary it encourages lock-in. The more accessories that are iPhone only the harder it is for a user to leave.

I've been telling people Apple makes their shit so that you have to buy new shit constantly for years. Having been a repair tech I can tell you the prices for parts are stupid for what sometimes are very minor issues, but Apple wont certify you if you do those repairs, so someone has a burnt out resistor? $795 MB replacement. For a 15 cent part and 15 dollars worth of labor.

Fuck Apple and every sheeple that buys their crap.

I saw this picture on my Facebook feed. I don't use these but my wife does use square to take payments.

Actually Square has a new BT puck for handling the new chip cards now, and so will the others, so they were already transitioning. You can also still plug in the old card readers into the dongle - Apple confirmed that.

I still think it's a bad move. I don't need a thinner phone. Screw that. They're thin enough. Any skinnier and it won't feel right in my hands. Plus I'd rather it be a tiny bit thicker and they give me more battery life.
That's just IMHO.

Yeah, I think thinness it overstated. Phones are thin enough. I do understand that waterproofing is the other big reason to lose the jack, However I've seen waterproof phones with jacks, so there's ways around that too.

My wife has an iPod Shuffle that's been waterproofed by an aftermarket company.

I just ordered a couple of Moto-X Pures so I don't have to deal with USB-C charge jacks or no headphone jacks for another 3 years. By then all our brains will be jacked into SkyNET and humanity will cease to exist.
