Anything with a M.2 slot supports booting off it to be honest. And a good M.2 drive is fast as fuck. Enabling my MB's fast boot, it takes less than 5 seconds from powered down state.

Ya. The Win8 circle animation does a quarter turn and the desktop comes up on this rig, and I haven't even tweaked the OS for an SSD yet.

Ok after looking its a AMD 1100T X6 3.3ghz, 16 gig of ram and a Radeon HD6700... Is it that old?
Yea Pugs, you and me with old hardware. I mostly play TF2 also. I have a quad core 2.4 with a boot only SSD, and a 1 gig mechanical drive that has Steam on it.

Can't afford to spend money on hardware, as I'm supporting my daughter through college. She has 1 more year left.

How sad...I use to get new hardware every 2 years. I've been running my same mobo for 7+ years now. Even my video card is old, but it works fine for TF2.

Yeah put a SSD in it a few years ago? Again building computers has been so slow the last 5 years Im having a hard time remembering when I did what.

Its not that I can't afford it... I don't see why I need to spend the money. It still works great, that and I hate "bedding in" a new computer. I Have other things that need my time and money and the computer has fallen to the wayside for main entertainment these days. Instead of reading stuff for hours on end I am actually doing the stuff I have read about!

Upgraded to Win10 just to authorize the mobo for a Win10 license if I ever want to upgrade down the road, and then used Acronis 2016 to restore it back to Win 8.1

Real world CPU performance comparison:

I regularly use Any Video Converter Ultimate to transcode .mkv video files to .MP4. That can take a while. Although AVC has the ability to use the GPU for rendering, I have found that while it's faster, the quality is not as good. Not sure if that's something specific to this product, but I have tried GPU rendering on a couple of other transcoders with the same results, so I stick with CPU rendering.

To get a sense of how much faster the new rig is, I had both systems render a 300MB .mkv file to MP4. Both using the same settings, and both rendering to and from a second SSD.

Old rig: 13 minutes
New Rig: 5 minutes

Now we're talking!

I've seen the same issues with GPU acceleration in Sony Movie Studio. I once did a comparison with the acceleration on and off using a 1 minute video game capture from avi to MP4. The GPU encoding was only a couple of seconds faster which would translate to a moderate time savings when rendering something an hour or two long but the quality looked off. The video had an odd blip at the beginning and looked a bit blurry to me.

Those are impressive times by the way. I'm still contemplating a 67700K or waiting for the a new Broadwell-E processor.

Heat sink/fan arrived. Nice looking unit. More massive than I thought, and yet no taller than the original Intel factory cooler. Nice looking unit, mounts very securely with a back plate and nuts. They include the driver for the nuts, and a big tube of CP7 thermal compound.

I have the mobo setup on my work bench, haven't mounted it in the case yet, despite that I can't really hear the CPU fan at all. I also can barely hear the PSU fan on this Corsair CX600 PSU. Unlike the issue I had with the Corsair PSU in my gaming rig, the fan never shuts down it just throttles down to a very low speed unless the PSU is put under a lot of load.

Finally mounted it in the case. Replaced the stock 120mm case fans with Noctua fans. Extremely quiet rig. My old rig (which is fairly quiet) is more noticeable from across the room than this one is with my ear up against it.

For my next new rig, I'm just gonna send all the parts to your place and have your meticulous self do the assembly. I'll drive up with some nice whiskey/bourbon, etc....
