$40 EEG Sleep Monitor

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Steve Gibson talked about this on his last podcast. He's been using it for the past 2 months to try to diagnose the reason for his insomnia.

The company that makes these went out of business, and all their stock is being sold on EBay.

It only works with an Android device.

If anyone is interested, grab one while you can. Gibson has a page on his website with a lot of info, and links to the last Ebay sale (more may be coming), as well as links to forums where a niche of owners of the device hang out and discuss how to care for and repair the headbands when they wear out.

Nice that they are not giving into the temptation to jack up the price.

Grabbed one myself. I sleep fine, but I think it would be cool to see what my sleep cycles are. My wife has issues with insomnia, so I'm going to try it on her and see if we can figure out what's going on.

Steve's going to cover his attempts at understanding his own insomnia on next week's Security Now podcast, based on what he's learned from recording his EEG every night for 2 months..

That's exactly what I'm wondering about now. It's like, OK, you have a device that measures things but as I see it now, knowing that doesn't explain why a person isn't sleeping IMO. At least, I'm not seeing that now.

For 40 bucks, it will be an interesting kinda toy for however long the headband lasts. Interesting to use it and my cpap gear and see what they say.

The device does give you an indication of what level of sleep you're in, correlated with time. Steve is a meticulous guy - he did a 6 month Vitamin D study on himself where he tested his vitamin D levels every 2 weeks. He should come up with some interesting ideas.

What the correlation with vitamin D? Reason I ask is I had my blood tested about 3 months ago, and they said I needed to take vitamin D supplement. So now I take 2000 per day.
As for sleep, I don't get much either according to my wife. I get ~6 hrs per night. Always have even when I was young.

No correlation with sleep. Steve is just rather meticulous about researching things. His work on vitamin D got me to ask my doc to test my D levels a few years ago, and they were very low. I also take 2000 units of D3 a day.

Here's Steve's vitamin D page: https://www.grc.com/health/vitamin-d.htm

I've been taking 5000 units of Vit D for a couple years now because 2000 wasn't enough according to blood tests.

As for my own sleep, I know that I have a far deeper, better quality of sleep on the days when I don't drink any alcohol. Many think that they sleep better on alcohol but that's not true. I usually feel tired the next day after a few beers, even if I sleep for enough hours.

I got my unit in. Won't get a chance to play with it until next week.

Be aware, these come with no instructions, but there's a ton of info on Gibson's page here, including how to use it: https://www.grc.com/zeo.htm

Scroll down to "Tips for use". It's important to clean the contacts on the headband with alcohol wipes the first time, and occasionally thereafter. It's also real important you use alcohol wipes to clean your forehead of natural skin oils before use. You can buy a box of alcohol wipes at any pharmacy. I have a box of them because my wife and I take monthly B12 injections.

Poor Steve. His site was DDOS'd so bad, his data center provider had to take him offline. It's the subject of this week's podcast.

However, Google has cached copy of his page with all the Zeo Sleep monitor info and setup instructiins:
