Anyone in FL have issues with Comcast last night and this morning 12/9?

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Was wondering if anyone else in Florida was having issues with Comcast last night and this morning.

My internet went to crap last night and until noon today. Lots of packet loss and Comcast's own speed test would give me something below 4Mbit down, and half a Mbit up. You could browse pages - with annoying pauses like a crappy satellite connection, but totally unplayable for gaming and I could not use remote control software this AM to work on a client's PC - had to use my Verizon cellular data as a backup.

Diagnosed it as outside my house because the problem persisted even with a laptop directly connected to the cable modem, and I also tried my old spare DOCSIS 2 modem to make sure it wasn't the modem itself. Cleaned all the connectors in the amplifier box outside, etc.

I strongly suspected it was either an issue with the local node, or an area specific problem but the dweeb on the phone said they weren't showing any problems. This is a rural enough area that no one else on my node might have noticed. We escalated to having a tech come by tomorrow.

Around 2pm today it cleared up. Hopefully it will stay that way. Haven't cancelled the tech - I think I'll let him come tomorrow and measure the signal strength anyway and pick his brains.

Was just wondering if it may have been a state wide issue. I noticed trace routes to the west coast were all going through Miami first before bouncing up north with a hell of a lot more hops than usual. We don't usually get routed through Miami from here.

I've been having some latency and sporadic timeouts, but not too close to you...33308. Seems slow right now as well.

I saw something about a recent big DOS attack on the DNS servers, might be related.

I recently read about a sight called http://www.downdetector.com (bookmarked on phone) that shows you all the local providers and lists what's going on if one's down. Pretty cool too, shows outage maps, etc
Beats trying to call for answers sometimes.
