The pilot, which just aired, was available for free on YouTube a month ago. It was very good.
For anyone who missed it, the pilot is repeating all this week, and the next episode is next week.

to me, it's a little 'dark', ~ but we like it

I don't much mind the drug references. Most programmers I knew in my 20's smoked pot and dabbled with other things to keep them sharp/awake/edgy/etc.
This guy has an anxiety disorder and the morphine is his attempt (ill conceived as it may be) to keep it under control, and from what I just read THAT may be important to the plot.
There are people on Twitter kicking around the idea that this is basically "Fight Club". That Christian Slater's character "Mr. Robot" is a figment of the Elliot's imagination - his 'Tyler Durden', and that the hackers working in the arcade are actually working for him (or his alter ego if you will). If you go back and look at some of the dialog, it actually looks like no one else can hear or see Christian Slater.
I don't know how I didn't catch that. That perfectly explains how Slater keeps appearing out of nowhere, and why Slater pushed Elliot off the boardwalk: Elliot himself jumped.
It also explains how this hacking group got into Evil Corp's servers in the first place. If Elliot is such a good hacker, and he's working for the company protecting Evil Corp's servers, how did they get this root kit past him?
My only problem with the show is that after the incredible pilot, the episodes so far have been a bit mundane as far as tech, and more about the major players and their moral flaws. I realize they have to build up some intrigue, and set the story arc up, but I wish they would get back to more techie stuff.

interesting, ~ that Mr Robot is/might be a figment of his imagination.
my husband watches it more regularly than i do now ( i catch up w/it when i can ), but i think it's going to stay the route of a show about character studies in a high-tech fabric; if it stayed too techie, there might be less viewers. well, we'll see how it plays out as time goes on I reckon,, : )
