car buying advice

Post by renovation »

thoughts
the wife and I are talking about buying a new -used pick up and keeping it in Florida.
were thinking maybe buying it here in Michigan. then getting it tag in florida.
what im thinking is giving up my Michigan driver's license. also buying the truck in Florida. we do plan on keeping it there year round. the thing is we may need to use it to take a load from here to Florida. any input were so confused as normal.
the Last time I was Talking to myself . I got into such a heated argument . that is why I swore I never talk to that guy again. you know what it worked now no buddy talking to me. :help

Unfortunately, I haven't much advice on pick-ups. Nor changing states with cars. I'm not sure if Michigan or Florida is worse for rust, but I suspect it's Michigan. So, it may be wises to get a Florida vehicle. Craigslist is my go-to for looking at cars.

well this may have to be put on hold for a bit. we miss calculated on fund's avail at the moment . were dipping in to some to buy the condo but the checks came in less then expected do to fees they charged . :( forgot about adm. fee's that company's can tack on and some due :(

one thing I have learned as of late. even do you may think funds are avail. when dealing with holding company's (banks and security companys )

You might want to split the idea of a regular daily driver and and long hauler into two parts - which is to say get a truck that suits your needs in Fla - gas mileage, etc. and then if you want to haul a bunch of stuff get a U-Haul box truck or similar. Or rent a trailer that one of your existing vehicles can pull. You really can't get that much into a pickup (been there done that many times :) .

Also, keep in mind that getting a FLA license makes you a FLA citizen for tax purposes, which is neither good not bad in itself, but you'll end up having to do split state tax returns (my wife had to do this when we got married) and it's a pain. my off the cuff 0.02

If you've got something that will pull it, like a 6 or 8 cyl work truck, those big flatbed trailers that U Haul has can hold lots of stuff.....there's also those PODS on demand containers, you load 'em up and they ship them to you. Or a massive yard sale..... :)

we found out today its still cheaper to keep are car's registered and insured in Michigan then Florida. it cost us hundreds more a year to insure them in florida with the same coverage.

I won't waste time on a new truck - just driving it off the lot you lose thousands of dollars in value. I would look for a 1-2 year old truck. Check out http://www.carcomplaints.com/ to see what people say about the trucks you may be interested in.

Reno, you may not be able to. There's a law here that requires you to register your vehicles here and get a Florida license if you meet certain conditions. There were a lot of people doing what you're thinking about and they cracked down on it several years ago.

I been fine as i own the property there in Florida.also have water and electric in my name. but the sames here in Michigan as i have both in my name .but i also have gas in my name here.
I just can't have dual licenses like use to be allowed. I have to be a florida or Michigan resident not both .
