So my neighbor has been bugging the crap out of me to take a look at his machine. I finally convince him to just drop it off and I'll take a peek at it. He was hesitant because its probably loaded with pr0n which I don't care. It fires up ok...takes forever to freakin post..then tells me no loader file exists. So I restart and jump into the bios only to find no hdd listed. Re-seat the sata cables and power cable and same. Swap to another rail on the power supply and bam...hdd shows up in bios. Restart...same thing. Back to bios...no hdd again. So I say screw it, take the hdd out, put it in my garage clunker and fire it up...only for it to immediately shut down and never turn on again.....wtf...this is why I dont work on these junkers anymore. His junk hdd killed my power supply. I buttoned his back up with his lethal hdd and fired it up for shiggles and I hear the famous ka-tink....ka-tink.....ka-tink coming from the hdd...

Text him and he comes over and asks how much to fix his computer...I tell him it will cost him nothing for me to fix it because I AM NOT FIXING HIS JUNK. The machine had so much dust, dog hair, and reeked of weed...

Had to vent...now Im on the prowl for a replacement ps. (shortb)

I never had one like that were it would mess up your own rig's power supply.

While not impossible, it IS rather unlikely. Most modern PSUs have a LOT of protection. Even if the hard drive was shorted or you reversed the SATA power connector, a decent PSU would just shut down.

Now if something else was shorting something out, the mobo or PSU may refuse to power up. Check to make sure a screw isn't wedged under the PSU or something.

For clients I like to buy the Antec Green 380 Watt PSUs, $45 or less if you shop around:

Not for serious gaming rigs (you want 450 watts or more), but otherwise They're rock solid PSUs. I have never had one fail on me.
