Well, my first question is if Earth and many years later (like Planet of the Apes), where did all the humans go (leaving animals dominating)?

The assumption is that this is in the past and it's primitive Earth (they show Saber Tooth Tigers). But then again that's a supposition.

from IMDB:
Storyline

One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity's escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind's new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai. When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai's craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

So it only took 1000 years for this much evolution to take place.. I'm not so sure about that.. But it's probably still going to be a good movie.. :)

lots of things come to mind with this one...i haven't looked into it past IMDB, so i don't know if there was a book this is based on or what, so here are uninformed guesses:

...Will Smith mentions "everything on this planet has evolved to kill humans"...so maybe they left after some kind of genetic engineering mishap or virus outbreak that changed the environment against humans.

...some kind of spaceships (or crazy Starship Troopers-like flying bugs that shoot lasers...) were attacking in the trailer. evil human faction? aliens?

...is this a Battlestar Galactica plot twist where humans return to earth and start the cycle over somehow?

So, all humanity on Earth gets wiped out except those who escape to another planet and yet all or many other species live and "evolve" in a mere 1000 years.

Pretty unbelievable plot line but it is Sci-fi so I guess we'll ignore all that and hope it's a good movie anyway.

What makes me nervous is that the director is M. Night Shyamalan. He didn't write it, but we know his predilection for "twists" at the end of a movie.

bumping this for one of the worst movies in a long time.

2/10 rating from me.

i strongly recommend NOT spending money on this. think of it as a vanity piece for Smith's kid, who in case you haven't ever seen act...can't...act.

the kid does the narration in the beginning and even then it's horrible.

2 points given for good special effects. that's all.

Rotten Tomatoes gave it 11% based on critics and an amazingly generous 44% based on audience.

yeah, i saw that. truly a waste of possible good stuff. lose the kid and let daddy Smith be the main character, then it would have been somewhat decent.
