Looks like the $40 deal is a download, but it should be an ISO you can burn to DVD. I checked all the online retailers and no one is selling an upgrade DVD.

Where did you find an OEM copy for $70? Newegg is listing them for $99.

Whatever you end up buying, make sure you get the 64bit version. Pity MS didn't just kill off the 32bit option entirely with Win8.

Users can get the upgrade from Microsoft Official websites or windows.com in 37 different languages.

Only warning I'd make is that I wouldn't put Win8 on a rig meant for serious gaming right now. I haven't heard of any issues, and a few sites have tested major games on it and it's run them fine, but it wouldn't surprise me if Win8 broke a few games.

However I think Win8 is perfect on a laptop. I definitely see a performance and battery life improvement. They have eliminated a lot of code bloat and unnecessary services, and heavily optimized it for performance and power savings on underpowered PCs.

The desktop GUI is back to the cleaner, leaner and faster Win2K style "Classic" desktop. No glass, no round edges. That Aero crap may look pretty but it uses more power and computation to render it.

You can create your own bootable USB or .ISO file to burn to a DVD, from the Windows.com download.
You also have the option to purchase a backup DVD from them for $15 plus shipping and handling.

Here's some info from the blogging Windows site:
http://windowsteamblog.com/windows/b/bl ... 39-99.aspx

Once you purchase your upgrade, the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant kicks off your download. It has a built-in download manager that allows you to pause and continue your download at any time as well as a check to ensure your download completes successfully.
After your download finishes, you can choose to proceed with the upgrade (“Install now”) or install later either from your desktop or by creating your own media. If you choose to create your own media, you will be able to create your own bootable USB or .ISO file which can be burned onto a DVD for upgrade and backup purposes. If you prefer, you also have the option of purchasing a backup DVD for $15 plus shipping and handling.
If you prefer to shop at a local store, a packaged DVD version of the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro will be available for $69.99 during this promotion.
This upgrade promotion for Windows 8 Pro both online and at retail runs through January 31st, 2013.

Well, it can't be that difficult. I'm sure FP will comment.

Googled how to turn off PC running Win8:

Just notice this from above:
Whatever you end up buying, make sure you get the 64bit version. Pity MS didn't just kill off the 32bit option entirely with Win8.
I know that 64 bit Win7 will NOT install on older laptops (probably other PCs too) with older processors unless there's a work around somehow?
Tryed on one of mine and installer said that "cpu doesn't support 64 bit"

I would like to know if there's a sure fire method to know if Win 8 64 bit will definitely run in my Vista laptop besides letting the installer tell me otherwise after the purchase.

Actually I think there's another way to go directly to the shutdown menu in Win8, but I'd have to fire up my Win8 test laptop to figure it out.

However, who cares? Who here doesn't just press the power button on their PC to shutdown your computer? I dunno about you guys but I press my power button to shutdown my laptop (I never shutdown my workstation). Hell of a lot easier than clicking twice with the mouse. The power button on a PC has initiated a normal Windows shutdown since Windows 98. Who still uses the Start menu?

Those of you upset with the Metro desktop, just plan on downloading the FREE Classic Shell app. It gives you back the normal start menu button and start menu (including the shutdown menu) and boots Win8 directly to the classic desktop bypassing Metro. That's what I'm using on my Win8 test laptop. I expect to be installing this on a LOT of Win8 systems: http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/

EVIL: Intel introduced x64 Pentium 4 CPUs around 2005. I assume AMD introduced them around the same time. Why in God's name would you want to install Win8 on a laptop more than 7 years old? There may not even be drivers for it.

If you want to know if your laptop will support x64 then Google the CPU model number. That will tell you if it's an x64 CPU or not.

HOWEVER: There is no point in installing an x64 OS is you have less than 4Gb of RAM.

The reason I lament that Microsoft hasn't killed off the 32bit OS is that it's a waste of resources supporting two completely different operating systems (different drivers, different update patches, etc). ALL modern CPUs are 64bit and all modern apps run under 64bit operating systems, and most 32 bit apps run just fine under 64bit Windows. MS should have just killed off 32 bit support. If you still have some ancient app that will only run on a 32bit OS then you can run XP or Vista or Win7 or run one of them in visualization.

We killed off the 16bit OS after Win98/ME (and good riddance). There was no 16 and 32 bit Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Let 32 bit die - the sooner the better.
