Yeah, Steam is real good about that, I've done it a dozen times now.
It doesn't even have to go into the same location it used to be in. Put the whole Steam folder anywhere, install (or re-install) Steam and specify the new folder location as the install directory, and all your games are already installed with all your settings and all your added content (downloaded maps, etc).
I use Allway Sync to backup my entire Steam folder to an external hard drive just in case.

OK, thanks for the advice guys. Being that the SSD listed above went up to $129 (no rebates anymore) and for a few bucks more $198, I got one for more than twice the size (256BG):
