such problems i have...
so i need a cpu and psu to complete a new rig. it's a x79 chipset, so i "unfortunately" have only three options for the cpu...the only remotely reasonable one is the i7-3820 for about $300 now. the other two are waaaaay too much to justify ($555 and $999+). the x79 is intel's LGA 2011 chipset that adds more pipelines and RAM. the asus mobo i have has 8 DIMMs and will support up to 64GB. not bad. i'm putting 16GB in it. mainly a photoshop machine for me, but will probably game as well.
so, with costs picking the cpu for me, i have to choose a psu (hence the other psu thread i posted...been reading up again). anyone buy a modular psu lately? i'm thinking Corsair again (i'm happy with another i have), but open to opinions.

Corsair is a good PSU brand right now. The problem is that PSU quality varies with the winds. Your best guide is to do a search on Newegg based on ratings. If there's a PSU with the right power specs and it has over 75% 5 eggs, and more than 400 people reviewing it, then you can safely assume it's a good PSU.

argh. so the final parts arrived today and i got the system thrown together. i went with a Seasonic X750 Gold psu. fully modular and i caught it on sale at newegg. it was 189 originally and got it for 119. well, so much for that. had everything up and running, installed W7...rebooted...and POP! off goes the rig and won't power back on. i checked everything and can't find anything fried, but i'm sure the loud pop was something in the psu. i can't open it up or i'll void the warranty...i just want to verify what fried. i tried looking with a flashlight but can't see enough of it to get a good look.
sigh. i only have one other psu with enough juice to run the new rig, but i'll have to rip apart my other desktop to test with it.

new PSU working as it should...began the rebuild process and trying to get data moved over to it now.
i haven't bothered with overclocking in a loooooong time, as it usually is just not worth the effort and/or stability risks for me. this rig makes it so easy (i7-3820), i figured what the heck and just did a quick multiplier bump. i went from 3.6GHz stock to 4.3GHz with no other changes needed beyond a few mouse clicks in the Asus utility.
temps are good at ~55C running Prime95 (<30C idle). i'm happy with that. this cpu sucks huge power though...it's thirsty. 130W is the max stock rating. i checked my UPS load and at 100% load, it draws more than 350W for the whole system (without the video card chugging hard...). that's about double what my old rig used. lol
now i have to decide on hard drive configuration. i have a few different SSD drives now, along with fast veloci-raptors and big 3TB drives. i'm trying to minimize drives inside, but want to take advantage of performance where possible. i'll probably start another thread on that...
