John Carter - two thumbs up

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Wife and I saw it today in 3D.

Bottom line: we both loved it. Beautiful cinematography, good script, good acting. I thought it was a pretty darn good adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough's original vision.

CONS: The 3D version is a waste of money. Wish we'd seen it in 2D. I officially give up on 3D. This was just about the worst example of 3D. It added nothing to the movie. It was pretty obvious the movie wasn't actually shot in 3D.

Not a real con, but I can tell why some critics had an issue with the movie, and it's the way John Carter can jump. At first it looks stupid, compounded by the fact that when he first jumps he's fully clothed and the flying wire riggers did a bad job of hiding where the wires puckered up his clothes.

Later on when he's mostly topless, the effect is MUCH better, and you also get used to it. It's not something they could eliminate or write around since it's central to the story. Earthmen have denser bones and stonger muscles, and thus they can jump in Mars' lighter gravity. It's not scientific, so suspend your reasoning because he can jump farther than a human could jump on Earth's moon, but that's how the original novel was written.

Overall it's a great movie. I was never bored and was on the edge of my seat most of the time.

I'd definitely recommend seeing it in a theater. Just pass on the 3D.

We just saw it too. And we liked it as well. It had a few cheesy moments & the plot seemed a bit too predictable, but generally, it was a good fun movie. The ridiculous distance he could jump was a bit annoying to my logical side, but I just tried to go with it.

So did you feel the same way about "The Incredible Hulk" and his crazy jumps? lol Or was it not quite that far? That was one of the only things that killed me about the first Hulk movie aside from the poorly done CGI in some spots, was that he could basically fly...

the only thing i didn't like about the jumping (i don't mind the overly exaggerated jumping abilities and strength compared to what reality would provide) was the LANDINGS. ok, so he can jump super high/far...but the landings would still be rough. if a bad guy can punch him and he gets knocked down/out...i would think a 1,000 foot drop or more could sting a bit. :p
