Internet is dropping every 12 hours.

Post by Qui Gon-Jinn »

Just sitting here gaming, Wife is online playing games on Pogo and our internet drops. First thing I do is head to the back bedroom of the house to check the modem and router. I get 1/4 of the way down the hall and she says it's back up. I check the modem logs to find this:

Code: Select all

You're too techie for your own good. Besides the log is just telling you the modem is losing a connection, really nothing more.

Keep a detailed diary of outages so you can escalate this. Could be a balky node out on the street, or just a very weak signal coming into your house.

Call them back and don't tell them anything about logs. Just say your Internet is dropping out regularly and you need it fixed. Insist they send someone out to check the wiring. 9 times out of 10 this is caused by a weak signal if it's not a problem on their end.

If a tech comes out he'll usually put a signal strength meter on the modem's antenna cable. If the signal is weak he'll replace the F fittings on the cable at the splitter outside and maybe replace the splitter for good measure. Any small bit of corrosion in any of the connections will cause a weak signal.

Does your modem have a direct connection (a "home run") to the splitter outside, or are you using a splitter to connect the modem and a TV to the same line? A home run is preferred for a modem. A modem needs more signal than a TV and by using a splitter at the modem you are halving the signal strength. Some of the new outdoor splitters even have a special tap for the modem that gives it more signal than the TV taps.

Could be you're been on the fine edge of signal strength for a while and now it's just gotten too weak.

Seems that people keep telling me that.. LOL

Modem has a Home Run. I MADE them do that when we moved in.

House was built in approx. 55. I can back track all residents from the time the house was built to me. Owner is my dad's best friend (they met in 5th grade. Both are now in their mid 50's.) I know that the wiring in most of the house is not the best but works. The CATV lines where a few years old and the tech wanted to re-use them. I let him do that on TV lines but the modem I made sure was new from the splitter where the Aeriel line hits the house. I had issues with sub standard connections on the line at another place we lived. If we hooked up the TV in the living room it degraded the signal to the Modem to much.

That's bizarre that it's happening at exactly 10:10, twice a day every day.
Have you got anything on a timer like Christmas lights, furnace or hot tub?

LOL

Don't do Christmas lights (Wife hates me for it) Furnace has been running less and less (mid 70's in Phoenix today and right now we have the front door open to try to COOL the house down). No Hot Tub.

Power is from a Dedicated Power Strip. It has the Modem, Router and Cordless Phone on it.

I am going to let it roll for a few more days and call Cox on my days off Fri/Sat.
