oil change time

when you need a oil change.
1st- do you do it yourself or take and have it done ?
2nd- what type of oil do you have in your car.
3rd -what weight oil do you use in your car.

now i just use a quick change oil shop for $29 filter and oil and mostly order 10w30

I do my own oil changes for the wife's van and my Charger.

2nd- what type of oil do you have in your car.

I've been using Royal Purple for a few years.

3rd -what weight oil do you use in your car.

I use whatever the manual say to use. Right now it's 5W20 for both.

I generally use Penzoil products

3rd -what weight oil do you use in your car.

10W30 in the Summer / 10W40 in the Winter

Myself (not that hard & I've heard so many horror stories about screw-ups that the shops make)

2nd- what type of oil do you have in your car.
Anymore, I just use whatever's cheapest. The Royal Purple is the bees knees though.

3rd -what weight oil do you use in your car.
10W30 (though you should use whatever your car tells you too)

I used to change the oil myself, but for $30 or less, I don't have to get dirty so I have a shop do it.

For my F150 and my Honda, what ever the shop puts in it. Usually the weight is 5-20, but I tell them I want 10-30 since we never go below 32°F here where I live.

On my 1996 Corvette, it runs on Mobil 1. I should have been running this oil in the Honda that we bought back in 2005, but don't want to switch at this time since it "might" cause leaks.

I do it myself. I have a VW TDI so I can do everything with out having to go under the car. I bought a vacuum extractor that allows me to suck all the oil out from the dip stick tube and the oil filter is a cartridge type with the cap up top. So I can even suck the oil out of the oil/water cooler for a damn near 100% oil change. If you don't suck it out its about 1/3 quart that will be left there.

I use Rotella 100% synthetic. It is rated for my car.

As for Royal Purple, google it as you'll be surprized by the results. I use Mobil 1 5w30 in everything now. Use to use Amsoil but it's too costly and a pain to order everytime.

What is your take on switching to Mobil 1 in the Honda or Ford? Will it cause problems?

whatever the dealer puts into my cars is what they get...$29 for an oil change in <30 minutes and i trust them more than a quick lube place. heck, lexus just dropped their prices in HALF too...$29 for a change there too. tough to beat and i only have to do it a few times a year at most.

i would have to check, but pretty sure my 92 honda gets 10w30 pennzoil dino and the lexus is 5w20 (?...need to verify) semi-synth.

I've heard nothing but good from both professional & amateur testing on royal purple. I've even seen posts buy guys who put it in their wives cars & their wives actually noticed that their engine was running smoother.

Not to say that Mobile 1 isn't a direct & good competitor.

Oh and if anyone is wondering why I put the cheap stuff in my car, I have 290,000 miles on my Geo Metro. I never considered putting anything nice in it because it's a throwaway car. Guess it likes the cheap stuff. One way or the other, so long as you stay up on the changes & never let the oil get too hot, most any oil will treat you well.

No, old myth.

lexus is 5w20 (?...need to verify) semi-synth.

Gets regular 5w30 normally but at our dealer, the paperwork says "semi-synth" too yet I highly doubt it. I think it's just regular oil.

Mobil 1 sells for $23, 5 qt container at Walmart.

i'll try to remember and ask what exactly it is the next time i take it in. not that it matters much in the end. IMHO, most modern day cars will die from something else long before the engine does due to the type of oil you do or do not use. now, if i was racing on a track frequently, then it may matter more...

In reality, if oil is changed regularly with ANY oil, the engines usually outlast the length of time most people keep a car anyway. The only times I see failed engines are when people fail to change oil, like go ridiculously long times between oil changes or they run low on oil and don't check it. Most people don't keep the same car for 15+ yrs and/or go over 200K miles.

3 out 4 times I have it done at a Firestone as my S.O. works for them. When I do it myself I use an evacuator as my VW has a belly pan that is a PITA. I will be doing it more since Firestone rules now forbid customers supplying their own oil.

I use Mobil 1 or Valvoline synpower since they are the only synthetics in the proper weight that are approved by VW. My engine is turbocharged and will sludge up if you use conventional oil. Did a valve cover gasket at 110,000 miles three weeks ago and the inside of the valve cover just had a light brown film on it that wiped off with a shot of degreaser.
