HP kills TouchPad, looks to exit PC business

Hewlett-Packard is taking a hatchet to its business and doing some radical restructuring.

The company said Thursday that it is looking to spin off its industry-leading but struggling personal computer business. HP also killed off the TouchPad tablet it launched last month, as well as its webOS smartphone line.

The move essentially leaves for dead the webOS software HP got by acquiring Palm last year, though the company said it will continue trying to "optimize the value" of its purchase. Though the move was unexpected, it's not all that surprising: Despite a huge marketing campaign, TouchPad sales struggled so much that HP almost immediately cut the tablet's price by $100. HP said none of its webOS products reached the company's internal sales targets.

this is a very very wise move so they can work on stuff there good at PRINTERS ! there personal computers sucked.

they live off of their server and infrastructure equipment...it will be interesting to see what they do with their desktop/laptop products...

Yes but they used to be the standard for inkjet and laser. Hopefully we see improvements.

I feel for the people that bought their new tablet with webos. You know that they won't really continue development on a dead product, and market as far as they are concerned.

They still are THE standard for lasers. You own a business, and you want your forms to print properly, you buy an HP laser.

I actually still prefer their inkjets over others (particularly their Officejet Pro series) for reliability. Kodak and Canon are the kings for photo quality right now, but I honestly think people should not be printing photos, not when you can get photos printed at Walmart or Walgreens for pennies a photo, and get far better quality.

Lexmark and Dell printers have to be the biggest ripoffs on the planet.

I have a pair of 6 year old Office Jet 6210 All In One's at home that are rock solid.

It's funny because I noticed the huge push they had been making on their touchpad devices & wondered if it was working. Guess not.

On printers, I like HP printers, but for those of us who refill/use CISS kits, they're not worth the trouble. For laser, they definitely are the best.

The last printer I had was a Dell but was actually manufactured by Canon. It was good to me till the head gave out.

i haven't had a printer in years. kind of funny considering i do so much photography, but then again, as FP said...it's a lot cheaper to just get cheap prints at CostCo or Walgreen's. for quality prints i use a pro lab online (bayphoto). anything else i have to print i just do at the office, but that's very rare.
