No, I'll probably use XP Pro, just because I'm very familiar with how to set it up. I'm still very fresh on Ubuntu and learning how to do things that I already know how to do in XP. heh..

LOL, I've got a PIII 566mhz Celeron system with a SATA RAID card running 4 1TB drives in RAID5 running WinXP off of a 10gb WD that just won't die. Mock all you want, but if you check the power numbers on that processor, it's got them all beat (even mobiles) at 11 watts.

My server was close to yours about 5 years ago with the hardware. It was a dual p3 450. with a 2.1 gig drive of some brand that refused to die with 2k on it.

Will do. It will probably be after the first of the year before I get started on this. I've got the stuff to get the server built, just don't have a lot of spare $$ for the drives yet. Had the other stuff laying around, so no cost there.

Thanks!

I had an old HP traded in for parts that seemed to run fine except for a bad hard drive. Fast forward about three months and it's now my 'Home Server' running 2 1TB and 2 808GB (yes, they exist) hard drives. It's an old LGA775 Pentium 4 630 running 2GB of RAM, Windows XP 64-bit on a 250GB IDE hard drive. I don't have any special RAID setups running on it, since I need the space more than I need the redundancy, but I eventually plan on getting 4 2TB hard drives and running a RAID setup. Different folders shared with different permissions across the house, music, video, disc images, etc. I've also got a virtual machine running a mini web server so I can stream my music over the net to my cell phone using Ampache. Only complaint is that the thing runs hot and isn't too nice on my power. Maybe get me an Atom board or something.

Ok.. So, revisiting this.. I ordered parts for my new rig today, they should be here tomorrow or Monday.. I'll post about it once I get it all up and running. I'm going to be making my current rig into the media server.. It's a Q6600, 4GB of RAM, and I'll be putting a 2TB HD in it. That's really all it will need for now. Then I'm going to set it up in the spare bedroom where it's out of the way and out of my room, I hope.. I just realized I don't have a wireless adapter for myself.. Damn It.. Anyways.. I'll post another thread on the upgrades in a few. :)

That's a lot of power for a home server.

Yah, not gonna be doing anything else with it.. I'll probably have it folding as well, once I figure out why folding causes this PC to lock up and take a dump. But I figure there are usually at least two people accessing shares at once in the house right now, and that number may increase once I share it out to my brother as well. I just need to figure out a better backbone for the server/network.
