ok just did a fresh install and its working nicely. My CPU / Mobo / Ram scores are not up to par on the Windows Experience but I am hoping to upgrade in Q2 next year if I get a bonus from work. May go Sandy Bridge Intel or score on a i7 setup from an early adopter on the forums. FP what diagnostic do you recommend for testing drive speed? I am on SATA II at the moment but am curious to see how my drive performance measures up.

ATTO seems to be the benchmark to use on SSDs and when using AHCI according to the guys at PCPER.COM who really know their stuff about SSDs:

Apparently a lot of the old traditional benchmarks don't work right under AHCI or with SSDs.

Defragging an SSD is not only unneccessary (SSDs don't become fragmented) it is also destructive.
SSD memory has a limited lifespan measured in the number of write cycles. A defrag very aggressively writes to the drive which will just prematurely wears it out.
The same for a sector scan or Spinrite. It doesn't fix anything on an SSD, and just wears out the drive before it's time.

The desktop is running fine. Ordered an OCZ Vertex 2 60Gb SSD from Newegg (Black Friday Special) and installed it in my work laptop using the same procedure to keep my old Windows 7 install. Worked just fine.

Another followup on the OCZ Vertex II SSD I installed in my laptop.
VERY nice boot times - especially from Hibernation. App load times are surprisingly not as big an improvement as I thought they'd be, but it's definitely snappier.
Took me a while to train myself not to wait for the laptop to finish hibernating. I used to patiently wait until the power light went out since I didn't want to jostle the laptop while it's actively saving memory to the hard drive. Now I just press the power button (which I have configured for Hibernation) and just slam the lid closed and stuff it in it's bag.
What was a big surprise was the improvement in battery life. I'd been told I could expect up to a 20% improvement but I never really believed it. Sure enough, I am getting dramatically better battery life.
This is an Acer Timeline laptop - very underpowered with an Intel Solo CPU running at 1.4GHz, which is the tradeoff you have to live with for it's impressive real-world battery life of around 5-6 hours. It's more than adequate performance for my needs as a business laptop, though.
Depending on what the laptop is doing, I'm getting around 7-8 hours battery life now with the SSD. I could probably get more if I used the most aggressive power saving mode but I find it annoying.
