i replaced my secondary desktop today (it's used for downloading, ripping, remote access, etc) and decided to load up a Ubuntu appliance from VMware. things look a lot nicer from when i last messed around with linux...about three or four years ago.

Yeah I like Ubuntu but I don't like the way it displays folders as I'm never sure what folder is what. Very confusing.

I am getting a cheap SSD from Buy.com that i got from a SlickDeals special and will install it and give the Ubuntu netbook edition a whirl on on my atom based netbook. I am intrigued to try the OSX86 but am unsure if my netbook (Gateway lt2032 has the parts to make it compatible).

Dont see yours on there but Im willing to bet being a netbook, theres a lot of similar hardware compared to the list of machines there. If it will install in work, you will not be able to update though. With OSx though, there is very few updates that really mean anything. I had a macbook pro for a while and there really was no need to update, it just works out of the box. Just cant have all the game features native.

Well decided to take my girlfriends clogged up dell desktop and put Fedora 13 on it. Installed like butter but managed to loose a portion of the hdd and didnt notice till I set up the partition table and install everything and copy all of her "important" stuff over. "unknown volume group" and # fdisk -l is showing crap. Tried to mount sda2 and its not part of ect so who knows. I might boot off the fedora install disc to show whats lost and what the sda's really are since the size is bogus in xterm. Hell I need to go into the bios and see how big the hdd really is LMAO!

Just found another reason to love Ubuntu.. One Click Burns... No, really.. I am making a copy of an XP disc for an HTPC I'm fixing to setup. So I toss in my thumb drive and locate the file and just for sh!ts and giggles I double click it. First thing that pops up is "Burn to CD" it's already set to record to the right drive. I just hit burn and BAM! It's done?! Why can't it always be that easy? Mind you, this was an image, not just the files/folders. I'm happy.

Installed nero 4 yesterday, same thing. double click image and it starts burning. Rar files are a pain in the ass since the bulk of it has to be done in term. What package installer do you use? I find that with FC 13, all RPM files that are not in native repository have to be run #rpm -i /home/XXXX/Downloads/<blah> or #yum localinstall <blah> and if they are unsigned then its a total pain. And installing bin with chmod is even more of a mess. Im going to try apt tonight and see if its any more seamless. Oh, and found my missing hdd space, i goofed when I installed it and left the default partitioning table there so root partition is 40gb!! In FC 13 root account is locked out so couldnt display the parition info in term but the hdd utility(yeah I shoulda looked around) showed me where it had went. Im too lazy to boot rescue and change it though. Got 38gb of free space after all her "stuff" has been copied over.

I'll be honest, I haven't gotten deep enough into it yet to understand what you're asking. haha.. I was just able to double click the image and it automatically popped up asking if I wanted to burn it.

On another note. For the last couple of days I have been noticing some instability. At random, the computer will stop responding, sort of. It's not locked up as I can still move the mouse around and I can interact with windows that are already open. But, for example, firefox won't load pages anymore and times out. Or Pidgin lets me type in the chat box, but won't send. I'm not sure what the deal is. I've also noticed, that if I let the computer go into screen saver mode, sometimes it doesn't want to come back out of it. I can see the cursor, but the box never pops up. I've tried googling and I've had little success at finding an answer. I sent an email to a linux guru buddy of mine and waiting to hear back from him.

I wouldnt be surprised that Ubuntu isnt playing nice with your sleep function in the bios. Try disabling it in the bios if there is one and just set to run screen saver without any hibernate features enabled. Have you isntalled any software yet? If not when you do, you will realize why people dont play with tux much....

Well, it was all working fine until a couple of days ago.. I'm wondering if it's one of the last updates.. Tomorrow I'll redo it and see what happens.. All I have installed now is WoW.

Honestly I'm not sure. It was the automatic updates that popped up.

Probably was a new kernel and something isnt playing nice with it. Try reinstalling your video driver. ATI NVIDIA?
