Made the Leap!
And landed feet first! I switched to Linux today.. I'm running Ubuntu 10.4. I'm really liking it so far. I don't have anything bad to say about it. It does everything I want it to and more. It's very clean and snappy. Boot times are awesome! I'm wondering if it has any memory restrictions. Although I don't think at this time I really need more ram. It's running super fast on 2GB of DDR2. It's actually putting my XP install to shame. And I won't even talk about how much better it runs than my Windows 7 install. Now to work on seeing what I can do that I don't know about.

Yes, they do. I've been using it non-stop now on my desktop and I'm severely tempted to put it on my HP Craptop.. I really like it. Still toying with some things and deciding what apps I like better. I start school on Monday, so that will probably be the true test as I'll be using it for more than just gaming come that time. And with Wine, there's no reason, that I know of, that you can't use MS Office.. I'll probably end up trying to install Office XP and see how it goes. But I forsee still having to use the windows side of the dual boot since I am taking all of my classes online. I'm sure I'll run into something that's going to require windows..

Definitely go with Linux on a netbook. I'm running Mint on my old Acer Aspire One. It boots in about 15 seconds. A great improvement over the 2½ minutes for XP and over 3 for Windows 7 Starter.tunis5000 wrote:Hmm I may try this on my crippled Windows Starter netbook. I take it the most popular apps like Firefox, Open Office, antivirus etc work?

No, you will need Cedega to run hard core games that have to be emulated. I have tried multiple games and the direct X simulation in wine is ok but not good enough for demanding games. Also any game that uses .net tooling is a pain in the ass. Its actually easier to get heavy games running OSX. I had BF2 and COD4 working OSX in about 10 minutes vs hours and hours of tring to get Half life 2 working in Fedora.....DaMaN wrote:will Ubuntu 10.4 + Wine run source based games like left 4 dead 2 and Team Fortress from Steam?
Exe...I agree, the file structure is very weird to navigate. OSX takes care if this for a gui and keeps you out of places you dont need to be!
