Most of this stuff is made in Taiwan, China, Korea - places where it's common for people to smuggle out chips that failed quality control and then they fab their own counterfeits.

Heck, it's happening with flash memory so it's almost certainly happening with RAM.
i hear that, i got a counterfeit flash card off ebay awhile back. it was an excellent look alike but would only hold a gig b4 messing up. was a sony 16gb card ms pro duo.

I don't buy cheap or questionable RAM & usually only buy on Newegg (of course after recent events, apparently even they are susceptible to fakes). Heck the failed one is Patriot Viper series which has an excellent reviews. That said, I've even had corsair & crucial fail me lately. Geil on the other hand has impressed me greatly (both in reliability & overclockability).

That's the problem. These cheap knock-offs are working their way into the normal supply chain. For example NewEgg or Dell orders a bunch of brand name RAM from a supplier but it turns out that supplier may unknowingly have received a pallet load of fakes, or maybe the employees themselves are swapping out inventory late at night replacing the good stuff with the fakes.

Since all this stuff eventually comes from the far east, there's a lot of shady stuff that can happen in the pipeline.
