here is Charlotte when she had her E-collar. had to be worn 24/7.
she coped pretty well w/it { well,, after banging into walls for the 1st day or 2 :) }, ~

Here's Sam in her daytime quarters and wearing her collar so she can't get into trouble and tear her stitches. She has a small litter box in there. The collar they gave us is transparent which is a big improvement over the old ones. She doesn't mind wearing it at all.

Follow up:

1 month after the surgery we took her in for x-rays. Looks good so far.

I had misunderstood - I thought some of those pieces of bone would always be floating loose but apparently they will all fuse together and they are starting to do so.

It's a little hard to visualize, but even though her leg is broken in several places, all those pieces are sitting in a cavity shaped like the original bone. With the rod in there to hold the ends firmly in place, all those pieces will start fusing together into a new leg bone.

The possible complications are that a pin on the rod will loosen and thus the reason we have to keep her fairly immobile. She WANTS to run a around like a maniac if we let her, but for most of the day she's confined to that dog kennel.

FOLLOWUP:

We took Sam in for her 2 month followup X-Rays yesterday. The bone has fused back together and she's off the restricted list - she can have full reign of the house again.

You can see that the bone peices have come back together. It'll never be perfect, but it'll keep solidifying. Certainly better than an amputation.

She runs and jumps and climbs just fine now that she's allowed to. Doesn't favor the leg at all and you'd never know there was an injury except the fur hasn't grown back in yet. She's hell on wheels.
