DSL with Century link, what to look for?

Post by canton_kid »

Anyone know anything about DSL etc... with Century link, formerly Centurytel?
I just found out a new sub station is going in SOON close to me!
Around first of year I should be able to get DSL and whatever else.

The Bozo's after 3 service complaints still have not been able to find the problem with my phone lines here. The last person, nice person, tried to tell me again that noise on my line was normal here in the woods, IT IS NOT, in 10 or more years with these lines I know the noise should not be there! Also the lines get horrible when it rains!
One good thing though was he asked if I was going to be interested in DSL when the new substation goes live soon.

Well I dought the people around here can keep it working since they can't even fix a simple 2 phone lines. I found the problem myself and just called in a 4th service call for the same line problems tonight!
Just lucky the service guy mentioned I had to be within about 5 miles of the station to get DSL and told me where the station is going in at.
I drove the back road to see how far I am. When I did I found the pedestal on the back road where the lines on my property tie into the main line has been ran over and smashed, ripped out of the ground, laying in 4 or more pieces, exposed wires, ground wire cut in 2 and so forth! I am the last one on the line here and they never even checked the pedestal after all my complaint of problems!
3 recent service calls and they could not find that! These are the people that will keep my DSL running if I sign up????? LOL

Anyway, when this new substation goes live I want better than dialup! Is DSL the best I should expect? I am about 3 miles by the most direct road route and about 4 miles they way they have my lines ran now.

Is Centurylink DSL normally decent? Any junk like download limits or other things I should look out for? What is normal DSL speeds I should expect?

I will look into this with Centurylink, but other than DSL not sure if anything else decent I should look for?

WOW, 3mbs? How does that compare to dialup 37K :lol
Would it be like 4x times as fast :s cratch

Just joking.

I really didn't know DSL got that fast.
What does it get on the low end? With these bozo's around here I hope it works at all and at least 128K and cheap!

I pay around $40 now for phone line and the ISP for dialup total, I hope for something around that price and drop those 2 and get allot better speeds.

No one offers DSL any slower than 1.5Mbit anymore that I'm aware of, but if you're on the fringe it could be a bit less.

If you are on the fringe it will be less. I am on the fringe with ATT and lucky if I get a sustained 1.1Mbit. A lot of times it goes down to 800ish. Still better than dialup.

Well of course I found a place :s cratch
Centurylink seems to offer 512k download and maybe 128K up still. At least that's what I was told by the service guy last time he came out to fix the phone. Which of course I am the one that found the problem with my lines after he kept telling me they were fine on the service call a few days earlier! Someone run over the pedestal on the back road and I normally don't go near the back dirt road, I guess neither does the phone repair people!
I drove the distance to the substation about 4 miles as my lines run, I saw the smashed pedestal then on side of dirt road.
And I want DSL with these people :s cratch

Anyway what he said is they are actually only planning to push about 10MB out here to the substation so 512K probably, maybe 1.5MB would be the best I can get he thinks.

The main office says they can't give any price or speed info or anything till it goes online because prices vary by area, etc.. etc..
Online though they have prices and the 10MB is not that much more than the 1.5MB, and considering the difference in speeds it's somewhat a ripp on the 512K at like 2/3 the cost of the 10MB I think.

Oh well, by the prices I seen I still should get far faster service for about what I pay for a phone line and ISP now, and maybe better more reliable service too?
I was told should be up before the end of year, and that is mighty close!
Sunday they were working on the buildings foundation.

Verizon has had en entry level speed of 1mbit about a year ago, I don't think that has changed since then. Before that it was 768k.

As prices vary by area, that is generally a reference to competition. If they have no competition they are going to gouge you like crazy. If they do have competition, the rates and speed packages aren't normally that bad.
When all else fails, replace the user.

Yep. I'll probably get gouged, if there was any competition around here I would not still be on dialup now LOL
Out here in the woods we don't even have cable for TV or anything either though I don't want any TV service anyway.
