Kitchen Remodelling

Well it's taken 4 weeks but the kitchen remodeling is done.

The kitchen is the last major remodelling we needed to do in this house. We were going to put it off because of the economy but circumstances forced us to proceed. I discovered a major long-term leak under the sink and when I ripped open the cabinet bottom I found a hug amount of mold and mildew. Probably it was contributing to our sinus problems the past few months.

It was so bad we had to hire a hazmat crew to do the demolition to keep the spores from getting blown around the house (they sealed off the kitchen with plastic and put it under negative pressure).

Anyway, since the lower cabinets had to be replaced anyway, and part of the floor torn up, this gave us the excuse to replace all the cabinets, the crappy linoleum floor with a wood floor, and install a proper under-cupboard microwave with a roof ventilator, new sink and disposal.

excellent improvement! i like those cabinets. i would upgrade my kitchen a bit, but i will hopefully not be there more than a year or so more...so not worth it for the cost.

hazmat crew! that doesn't sound cheap...

That's a Mohawk wood laminate floor. We had 3 layers of vinyl flooring and they could not rip it up without destroying the plywood underneath, so we opted to have 1/4 ply put on top of the old floor and then the wood floor was glued directly to that. Side benefit is it feel a lot more solid than it used to. The old floor gave a bit.

The installers did a nice job. A little scary having the wood floor though. I already dropped a screwdriver on it and left a mark.

The wife wanted drawers in the lower cabinets and that seems to work very well. No bending over to reach into the back for a pot.

The lower cabinets have a 2 inch spacer behind them so that the counter is 2 inches deeper than normal. They're formica counter tops but they're very nice with a textured finish that looks and feels like flaked stone. We don't use a dishwasher but there was a hole in the lower cabinets for it previously. We filled that space with a cabinet that can be easily removed to install a dishwasher later if we every want to (probably never will unless we put the place up for sale).

Looks good. I put a wood laminate floor in our first floor hallways and bathroom a few year ago, wasn't exactly my idea of fun.
Once my son dropped a muffler on it, took out a few chunks and I was fairly upset. I have patch material yet still haven't fixed that. Another time we had our basement walls reinforced (a common problem here) and a guy apparently dropped a steel beam on it, scratched it up a bit but we didn't see it happen. We should have said something but didn't and I know what's required to replace those boards so we deal with it.
Otherwise, our dogs claws don't seem to scratch it, at least not that we can see without glasses on.

Very nice, definate improvement.

There are patch kits to fix gouges in the laminate (at a hefty price of course).

A top end laminate is very resiliant to gouging & scratching. I've dropped hammers on mine & it hasn't got a nick yet. Real or engineered hard wood on the other hand is pretty soft & very suseptable to both.
