Tempory botnets are a lot smarter. Poland and Cz have a lot of explotable machines with some very decent speeds. Dont ask me how I know this. For the email spam a botnet isnt even necessary, just a good email bomber and a lot of text documents to spare. As for the DDoS attack, verli exploit is much faster with a some simple C ++ knowledge and some very elementary raw commands a 100mb line can be brought to its knees in a matter of seconds. Takes roughly 4k connections per second with about 10 syn packets each to completely destroy a 5mb line. Best Ive seen....is 65k per sec with 5 syn packets, it brought an entire array down, roughly 36,000 different IP's.

it makes for a good story, but (regardless how benign and well intended) they broke the same laws they were reporting on. i don't feel bad for the computer owners that were taken advantage of, but i also don't agree with doing a "real" demo of this for a story.
