Getting Verizon FIOS

Post by Executioner »

I was in my garage this morning working on a friend's pc, and the Verizon guy shows up wanted me to sign up to get FIOS. FINALLY!

I will get 10 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up compared to my current DSL of 2.8 down and 0.6 up. I have it setup for them to come out on Feb 7th. Cost: $69.99 for both a lan line (unlimited nation wide calling) and internet. I currently pay $85/month, so the upgrade will be nice and save me a few bucks each month. As a promo, I also get a 3 month $15 discount. I was thinking about adding the TV service, but a guy I talked to at work said he kept his Dish Network satellite because he said it was a better service than Verizon.

If I op for Verizon TV, all 3 services will cost me $105.98/month. With Dish network, I'm paying $85/month. I've been thinking of calling them to see if I can get a temporary reduction in the cost of service and a free DVR. I've heard of people calling their communication companies and asking for discounts on their services.

Congratulations! If Verizon would upgrade all of their lines to FIOS, I have no doubt they would close a few cable companies. Let us know how good it is once you get it installed.

sure wish they would get optical around here. comcast has been throttling bandwidth like crazy, even to the point where you lag in games on supposed 4 mps down :(

Hmmm, is this technically better than the cable's 10Mbps service that I have now?

Yes, because the line is not shared like with cable or even DSL. I have the lowest package at 10 down and 2 up. They have other packages that go all the way up to 50 down and 20 up. Mine is simply the cheapest one called FAST.

Fast
Download up to 10 Mbps / Upload up to 2 Mbps

Faster
Download up to 20 Mbps / Upload up to 5 Mbps

Faster Plus
Download up to 20 Mbps / Upload up to 20 Mbps

Fastest
Download up to 50 Mbps / Upload up to 20 Mbps

with the last package costing you $139.95/month.

Pretty sweet. The 10Mbps would be plenty for me. Shame it's not in my area.

Well, looks like we're getting an upgrade to 60Mbps after all (I'm in Charter's area).

Got home yesterday to discover that my phone line is dead. Check everything out and sure enough its dead. Go over to my neighbors to see if their phone line is dead, and they are not so I have an issue with mine. They told me that a Verizon truck was parked in my front yard. I open the phone box on the side of the house, and sure enough they ran some cable from the side walk to the side of my house, but they left 2 wires disconnected.

I called Verizon, and I explained to the person all this information, and her solution is to disconnect all my phone and DSL model. Wait 30 seconds and plug them back in. I do this, KNOWING that its not the problem, since I can plug in a phone into the test jack and there is no signal. The idiot then tells me that I must have connected up some additional equipment to make the line stop working. I explain the situation again, and told her that the Verizon truck was parked in my front yard and they ran a new cable and must have forgotten to re-connect my phone line. This same idiot then tell me that they might have been for another residence on my block, and I have an issue that is related to new equipment that I installed.

To bad I could not reach inside the phone to bitch slap her. She then schedules me an appointment for a tech to come out on Feb 2, then I told here that it was unacceptable, since your tech forgot to reconnect my phone line back up after installing the cable. "Sorry sir, that is the only time open for a tech to come out." So I had to call the guy I signed up with on Saturday, and he assured me that it would be fixed today.

Like I told the gal, if it happened last week, and I had to wait 3-4 days, not a big deal, but I pay my bills on line and need my connection for this; otherwise, some of my bills will be late. So hopefully when I get home this late afternoon, my service will be restored. Maybe now I'm glad I'm getting only the phone/internet service installed and not the TV, or I'd hear it from my wife who watches TV most of the time.

Yep. The tech called me on my cell and said the line from the street to the house was disconnected. All is working again.

speed please?

I read an article about japan- most modern apartment buildings have optical run into the basement by multiple carriers so you simply choose your carrier, they hook you up and off you go. Each carrier has an access box in the basement already and they compete for customers.
