Bad upload speeds

Post by two slow »

Would this be an ISP problem?
I've checked for viruses, spyware, and trojans using FP's removal instructions. I found nothing. A couple internet speed tests are coming back with errors or just very low upload speeds, around 0.45kb.

Have you rebooted your modem, routers and switches (if any)?

Is there more than 1 PC on your connection, and if so are they all doing this or just the one?

Certainly could be your ISP. I'd call them. Be prepared to bypass any router or switches - they'll want you connected directly to the modem to diagnose the problem.

I would also strongly warn you to image your boot drive or at least make a system restore point BEFORE calling your ISP. The jack-arses will almost certainly have you make changes to your network and Internet settings that, I can guarantee from long experience, will screw up your computer and not help. You'll have to do it just to satisfy the dweeb so he can escalate the issue. Just bite your tongue and do it even though it's pointless.

Hopefully they'll send someone out to look at your wires and your modem, if not lean on them.

I tried rebooting everything.
I have charter cable. They are terrible to deal with.

I've been through this before with Time Warner. In my case, the uploads and ping were fine, but my downloads were horrible. You just have to be the squeaky wheel.

Well 2 hrs on the phone with tech support didn't fix it. They are sending someone out to check the lines and modem.
The tech was pretty knowledgeable. All in all it wasn't a bad experience.
Once resetting the modem worked but then we had to reset it again and it quit again.
I checked the lines and they are all snug. Other than waiting until Tuesday for the serviceman to show up, is there anything else I can try?

Either a bad modem, or some corrosion in one of the connectors. If they're sending someone out then that's good. He can put a meter on the cable at the modem and see how much signal you're getting.

I had this problem when I first got cable internet. They tried every test & everything came back fine. Checked all my cables & all fine. Ended up that it was the modem. The tech let me borrow a different one for a couple weeks and all my problems went away. Though, there are many other factors as FP noted.

I have had the service techs out here twice now, called 5 times, and its still messing up. I did notice a a pattern though. Between 6pm and 9pm through the week it messes up.
