Weird Prob

I have this old comp socket a has been in the closet for some time well i finally got a new well used socket a proc not sure on specs well i hooke every thing up i used good ram and good video card the system turns on for 10 sec the shuts off if i unplug the p4 connect it will stay on till i shut it off what could cause this i have tried to psu and still nothing

Power supply?? Pluging the cpu power in puts just enough strain on the power supply that voltages go down elsewhere enough to make the motherboard unstable??

Sounds like a heat problem. Boot into the bios and see if there is some sort of temp monitoring section and watch cpu and mobo temp to see if its high. Does the mobo have a built in speaker or do you have one at all plugged in? Im thinking it should beep when overheating but who knows. If there is no section in the bios to monitor temps, I use a laser thermometer and point it on the thickest section of the heat sinks. Being that it has been sitting in the closet for "some time" maybe the northbridge chip sink thermal paste has dried up. Shot in the dark though.
