Hypermiling

This hypermiling will not work in my neck of the woods due to all the traffic I have to deal with. We have way too many stop signs and traffic lights that in my opinion, are not really needed. They are put there because some idiot caused an accident or several accidents during a time frame.

I do it with my beetle. depending i can easly get 55mpg+. Some people that go to the extremes are getting 80+, but i cant see doing all that.

Geo Metro's for life... or until they come out with a suitable replacement. I can do 35-40 every day in the city. On the highway, I can pull off 55mpg. I'm sure if I stripped the car down a bit, I could do better, but I'd rather pay for the luxuries (what little there are) in my Geo.

The article says "taller gears" for one but that'd create higher rpms at a given speed. The technique is used by guys who want faster 0-60 times in modded cars but doing so makes mileage worse.
And, where exactly does one get taller gears and "eco" cam shafts for cars like those mentioned anyway?

I call BS on this guy! This reminds me of the "running your car on water" article. The reporter just takes the guys claims but doesn't do ANY investigation. I'm guessing that the mpg he's reporting is not tank average and he took that reading when he was going downhill behind a semi. I use to play with the fuel consumption display in my mom's Chrysler LeBaron. I would reset it at the top of a hill and watch the display hit 70+ mpg as I coasted downhill.

Cars like the metro will never be built again in the US. Our government mandates that cars must be able to survie a 45mph crash into a wall, have front and side airbags, and soon all cars will have to have Electronic Stability Control.

well one thing i wont do is shut the engine off while coasting. I dot really have to, my TDI will not inject fuel until the RPMs drop to 1200. Turning your engine off and restarting it all the time has got to wear out the flywheel if your using the electric start.

Taller gears means that you can run lower rpms at higher speeds. to do any of this hypermiling stuff means you have to drive slower then grandma. take off really slow, do 45-50 on the highways... it goes on. most people just cant drive that slow all the time. thats why i like my TDI. i can still drive fast and get good milage, but if i dicide to slow poke i get even better.

Believe it or not, Geo's Metro's have a cult following. They have custom cam & crank shafts. They have timing gears in different flavors. Geo's were popular for racing for a while & now they are becoming popular for MPG again. It's true though, you have to drive like a grandma to get the milage listed in that article. But it's nice knowing that if you're in the middle of Kansas with 2 gallons in the tank that you can make it to a border if you drive the right speed.
