VOIP Suggestions

Anyone here currently use VOIP for their residential phone service? If so who would you recommend?

Actually what I'm looking for is to activate a service here but take the "phone" overseas to minimize my long distance bills to and fro.

I know there is Vonage but was wondering if there any other service providers worth looking at.

i use voip
voip long distance still applies but its really cheap

I use a local company Citynet.net. Have been very happy with it. It has all the bells and whistles, long distance is free. I love the ability to control how a call is treated, whether it be answered, dropped, forwarded, you name it. Voicemail is e-mailed to me. I even made a rule that only applies to a few numbers. When a call is answered, the caller hears a loud long fart and then the call is dropped. This is for people I don't like. lol

thanks for the suggestions... i went with phonepower.com

got it hooked up in less than 5 minutes. only paying $9.95 a month with the usual features (free long distance within U.S. and Canada, etc.) i guess the only downside is I only have 500 minutes a month outgoing (but unlimited incoming).

either way the plan/price is just perfect for what i need.

best of all i can take the phone "abroad" and now i can make calls to/fro without having to worry about outrageous international rates or calling cards

Skype has been working fine for me. I've heard complaints about reverb on the other side from time to time, but I believe that it has to do with my mic. Costs .02 per minute.

the gurus at the security conference I was at said some of the VOIP apps have issues. They said the older version of skype (which I use on the road) had a vulnerability which allowed someone to download files to your computer.

consensus was that as MS starts to tighten up their act, haxors are focusing more and more on other apps.

Fortunately, I only use Skype for outbound calls & then shut it down the rest of the time. Though, I do see that being an issue for someone who wants both ways & leaves it on.
