the upload is still weak...but it's better than nothing. the service has been solid for years...hopefully the upgrades do not change that for me. the customer service rep said "oh, wow...you're the FIRST ONE in your area to order this!". maybe i'll be regretting it! hahaha
finally!
finally!
got an advertisement in the mail today about an upgraded DSL speed available in my area. i've been on 4Mbps/512Kbps for about three years...the ISP's infrastructure didn't support anything faster. apparently they finished the ADSL2+ upgrades (i think that's the right infrastructure) and will be getting 10Mbps/768Kbps early next week.

Zyfer: I'm sure you're aware that the 20Mbit claim is dubious. That's "burst speed". Comcast does the same thing. I have a supposedly 12Mbit connection but realistically it benchmarks between 7 and 8Mbit.
What I am rather happy about is that they've apparently increased my upload speed. I'm getting 1Mbit pretty consistently and as much as 1.5 Mbit. Used to be around 500Kbit. No wonder I'm not having any problems hosting a COD4 server with 14 players. :-)

True, it is not exactly the same, I tested it via a download from Microsoft and got 19.2mbit/s or about 2400kb/s
I am still quite happy. It is unlikely I would utilitize it all. I would give the 5mbit back for half that much more in upload...
Comcast doesn't have the best of reputations, it is a known throttler.

Roadrunner (Time Warner) sucks in my area I go from a 7MB burst to 100Kb between the hours of 7:30 and 11:00 pm. I can't get FOIS but I can get 3MB DSL. I'm planning on doing this as soon as I can get the time to make the necessary phone calls.ZYFER wrote:True, it is not exactly the same, I tested it via a download from Microsoft and got 19.2mbit/s or about 2400kb/s

I'm just fed up with them. I refuse to call their Customer Support anymore because it's always the same crap. I can't get them to understand that it's not my computer and my modem doesn't need reset. It's like clockwork during the weekdays. Around 7:30, everything goes to pot. The last straw was when the level 3 tech came out and since no one was home, left a note saying they needed to get inside. I called and scheduled another apointment and took a day off work so someone was sure to be home. THe tech calls 30 min before the appointment and cancels saying there is a bandwidth problem and they are installing more bandwidth. I don't doubt that but I made the apointment 1 week prior. They even called the day before to confirm. He could have at least came out and told me face to face. Since, the appointment was ~4:30, I'm thinking that I was his last stop for the day and he decided to blow me off and go home early.ZYFER wrote:Perhaps, I have Brighthouse not Time Warner Cable. TWC sure has went down hill since I had them, before Brighthouse bought out their cable interests here.
TW has really gotten bad quickly. I had this same problem ~8 months ago but after only 2 phone calls, someone came out and they fixed the problem. It was a line issue at the time. This time, it's the network. My Father-in-law is having the same issues in the same time frame. I believe he is going to DSL as well. We both have all of our services (phone, cable, internet) bundled through TW. However, I doubt the loss of two customers will even phase them.
Yeah, you run into those issues alot. Companies never want to take responsibility. You tell them what it isn't, but they still persist on you going through nonsense steps that mean very little.
Birghthouse has been good with support. If anything goes down, they can have a person there the next day. I had an issue with my modem more recently. It was running horribly slow. Not slow enough for you to notice browsing the web, but noticeable when you are trying to host a game. They bounced me up to their higher tech, I told him everything that I did, and he agreed the modem (which was old) probably had issues. I have one of those digital phone/cable modems types.
I wish you good luck on finding an ISP that gives a damn about its customers.

Ok Im lost here, wouldnt 19.2mbit/s be 19,000+kbps? Im on a 3mib line and get 2500kbps dL. Must be the bits for bytes thing that messin with my head

Bits:.......... 20132659.2000
Kilobits:...... 19660.8000

Guess you mean KB/s

ISPs rate speeds in the megabits and kilobits, similar to how your network speeds are rated. When you are downloading something, like a XP service pack for example, it relates that in the form of bytes.
So if I am downloading something at 2400 kilobytes/sec, it relates to 19200 kilobits/sec, or 19.2 megabits/sec.
Don't forget to multiply by eight when going from bytes to bits. When going from bits to bytes you divide by eight.
That calculator seems to be off, it makes too assumptions, with the end result of a number which is off in this case.
