COD4 - Just buy it!
Amazing game! Just the first two missions are more action packed and immersive than just about any FPS game I've ever played.
This game, more than any FPS I've played, is like being in a movie. The action is intense. The AI is very good. Your AI teammates really feel like real people.
Multiplayer is fast and furious depending on the game type. I've played Headquarters (capture and hold control points) and Team DM so far.
My only bitch was the awkward way Punkbuster installed itself. Maybe it's because I bought the game through Steam? The PB installer ran after the game installed and gave me absolutely no indication of what I should do. I later figured out (after the game kept telling me that PB was not active) that I had to re-run the installer (which there is no icon for - you just have to download PBSETUP yourself) and then specifically install the COD4 in the PB setup utility.
I just can't understand why the COD4 installer can't do that for you automatically.
I also think it's hilarious that COD4 installed the MPLayer client (without asking permission of course) when you don't need it to play online, and since you're using Steam to play the game anyway.

This gives you some idea of the atmosphere. This is not a cutscene - it's actual game play from the first mission. I was freaking out:

Forget Crysis. That game will not be a pleasant experience on any modern hardware. Extreme Tech benched it on a bleeding edge 3-way SLI rig and it still got miserable frame rates.
Put Crysis off for 2 years. Same was true with Far Cry. Matter of fact, from what I've seen of Crysis I'd rather just re-install Far Cry and play that instead - I think it was a better game.
Get CoD4. You will not regret it. It should run great on your hardware. I'm a little bit GPU limited with my Geforce 7950GT but I'm getting much smoother framerates now after turning down the eyecandy slightly and using 1024x768 resolution.

Man I just played that mission. I know what you mean. That was too cool. Pretty darn fun firing the cannon from the helicopter too during the helicopter raid a couple of missions later. You know, if they made a game that was nothing but the death from above missions i would buy it.
It's the variety and mix of gameplay that really make the game interesting.
