On pricewatch, the REAL quadro 2 MXR's are $366. I would say around $160 shipped if it ran good.

I don't suppose this mod job would benefit gamers much eh, mostly beneficial for graphical users?

To do the mod you'd have to have access to the GPU core or no? Cause on mine its already got a Tennmaxx cooler stuck on there.

What kind of notable difference is there before and after the mod?

The major difference with the mod is minute quality differences. You may also get another 10 mhz out of the GPU/MEM. This is because certain features are enabled that are only on the Quadro card.

However, the mod still comes nowhere near to a real MXR, because the MXR has better ram.

For mod info, check out
http://www.tweakhardware.com/guide/quadro/

Be careful. I messed up a resistor when I modded my card cause they're so small (had to steal one from an old hard drive)

ok.. let's answer some questions here then...

first you don't need to get inside the gpu... the gpu's on the geforce cards are the same... geforce=quadro... geforce2=quadro2... by modifying the card, i not only modded the the card for extra cooling, but also changed the card identification (with careful soldering) so that all the quadro features of the gpu are enabled...

bit- as for the performance difference between the true and the modded versions... i think it's pretty close... the extra cooling will allow the core/mem spd to be clocked well above the actual quadro spd... unless you've got actual benchmarks to back up your theory... also the mod in NO WAY affects or improves how the card overclocks

so far i've seen about a 240 3dmark2000 jump... i believe the biggest gains to be seen are in professional OpenGL applications... but games will show a minimum gain...
i just figured, i can modify the card to enable all the professional graphics features such as shared back buffer, 3d windows clipping, 128mb frame buffer, and nvidia shade rasterizer....
in the end i guess it would be worth more resale value...

here's a quote from bit's link btw:
"Talking about cards that are being used for gaming, there won’t be any major differences. Oh, there is one occurence I can tell you about, and that’s when converting GeForce 2 MX into Quadro 2 MXR. Users, who do so, will experience great changes in velocities of 3D gaming. This is on the basis of changed core speeds, and the achieved speed-changes will only occur when converting into Quadro 2 MXR. In Quake 2 it’s possible to achieve approximately 41% more fps (in high resolutions), than using an unconverted GeForce card."
"But as we start working in graphic programs like 3D Studio Max, Adobe Photo Shop, Paint Shop Pro and Auto Cad and more, I might recommend you to fasten your seat belt. Using programs like mentioned above, it will be an advantage to have Quadro based cards, as these manages to work with higher calculations than unconverted GeForce cards. In the table below is listed the differences between the lots of cards when using functions in graphic programs. I don’t think you’ll find it hard to see the differences!"

if anyone wants this done for their geforce based cards... i can do it for them for a small fee and (at their own risk)... so far i've already modified all my geforce cards (except the one scsi bought from me) and they're working great... i'm currently using my modified gts to quadro2 pro card and i'm very happy with it...

(any geforce card can be modded into quadro)

Hmmm. Interesting. My prophet MX did 210/200 before. Now that it's modded, I can get it to 220/210 (stock cooling).

My benchmarks yield around the same results.

the achieved speed-changes will only occur when converting into Quadro 2 MXR
I still have no idea what this is supposed to mean LOL

i have no clue... but this is the first that i've heard modding the card will let it overclock higher...
no such thing... just common sense.. that's all...
unless the modding was the additional cooling (not the soldering)

what kind of fee would we be looking at and how long would it take?

Thanks!

i dunno....
i was thinking prolly $25 + the cost of shipping it back...

if i screw up the card due to losing the resistor, i'll pay for the card... but that is the ONLY reason i will cuz it'd be due to stupidity
but like i said, send at your own risk... i'm not saturn, but i have done this to my own cards already and it's fairly easy for me to do now... takes no more than 15 minutes for me now if that even... but there's always that chance of it getting screwed up... if you guys are feeling brave... i'll see what i can do for you
