New computer Win XP not recognizing IPOD?
New computer Win XP not recognizing IPOD?
I have a newly built PC with XP sp2, and I cannot get my computer to recognize my IPOD. I tried every 1394, and usb on my computer. I just installed the newest Itunes version. I am trying to run a new Ipod setup downloaded from apple, and XP gives me big problems: Unknown version, file is corrupt, etc. This is the biggest pain in my a#$. All of my other computers have no problem. I also went to apple's site and tried the 5 r's. Any suggestions out there?

All manufacturers use a standard OEM WinXP CD. At most there may be a few customized things like the company logo in the wallpapers, and sometimes it's BIOS-locked so it only installs on that manufacturer's computers.

So, I guess you are saying I am at square one? This is driving me nuts. I put the IPOD in disk mode, out of disk mode, restarts, re-installs, etc. It plays great, doesn't lock-up, plays video, but it is not recognized by my computer. Not in Device Manager, not in admin tools nothing. No noise when I plug it in. The IPOD does turn on though when I plug it in, but only to take a charge.

Did you install ALL the drivers for the HP? I suspect you're missing something. Most important are the chipset drivers. They need to be installed first, otherwise other devices don't work properly.
You should also download the latest drivers from HP's website.

Whatever your PC is, if it was made in the last 4 years you almost certainly need to install chipset drivers for it to work properly. Forget the lame-ass generic featureless drivers through Windows Update - they won't do anything for you.
If it's an OEM system, go to the manufacturer's website. If it's a custom system, go to the mobo manufacturer's website.
My suspicion is that the iPod uses a feature of USB that is not used by the other devices you've tried.
You have to at least eliminate the possibility it's the chipset drivers. Process of elimination.

Yes, I updated the NVidia chipset to the most current for my MOBO. Sidenote I just hooked up my wife's IPOD to my computer via USB, nothing same as my IPOD. Her's is 4th gen. no pics or video, mine is 5th gen video. I attached her IPOD through 1394 wire, BINGO all works as is should. I get the audible ding, and it is recognized in Device Manager etc. 5th Gen. IPODS are not 1394 compatable. I tried and my IPOD knew it was hooked up via 1394 via screen saying so. So where am I? USB ports work for printer, jumpdrive, Wacom Tablet, etc. Just not IPODS. Since I have the most current NVidia 4 Chipset driver is there anything else I can do?
I went on NVidia's site and it said this about NForce 4 Driver. I do have SP2 with all updates though. This would definately explain what is going on though. I can I tell if USB 2.0 isn't really USB 2.0? I do have it enabled in the BIOS and it is set USB 2.0 enabled and fullspeed or highspeed. IPODS are not recognized USB 1.1.

I have two IPODS, One 4th Gen., and One 5th Gen. The Fourt Gen. IPOD isn't recognized by USB, but when I plug it via FireWire (1394) it works perfectly. 5th gen. IPODS are not fortunate enough to be recognized by Firewire (1394), thus I am out of luck until I find a way for my computer to recognize my IPOD via USB. I updated all Mobo NVidia drivers, and BIOS. I have a total of 8 USB sockets. 4 on the Mother Board, 2 on case, and 2 Gaming USB's attached to Mother Board. In the BIOS I have all 2.0 USB enabled. I did all of Apple's suggestions from the Apple Internet site. The IPOD works great, just not able to get it recognized via USB. Also when I did the IPOD check the USB portion said it was OK. Again the Operating System is WinXP Pro SP2, Motherboard ASUS AN832-SLI Deluxe, and all USB ports work with printer, Jumpdrive, and Wireless Ethernet Adapter.
