Yes, one thing: avoid it like the plague. I wouldn't install it if they PAID be to take it.

I'd recommend AVG Free or Professional, or AntiVir. ANything that doesn't suck up all your CPU cycles and resources.

AVG is the alows viruses from 20 years old in. It has got to be the worst one out there.

I always see people going nuts over norton on its resourse hogging. 06 uses under 3 meg and no cpu cycles.

So, I gather nothing more then the usual misbeliefs.

I do this for a living. I'd say 20% of my service calls are related to people installing Norton. Norton interferes with some apps, inadvertantly blocks some processes, uses a ton of memory (especially the Security version - a whopping 120Mb, even the AV app is a hefty RAM killer).

Speaking of misbeliefs, I have close to a hundred clients running AVG free or Pro and I can't remember the last time someone got a virus.

Frankly ANY AV app does the job nowadays. It's not HARD to block a virus anymore (spyware is the problem, and you'd better have a SEPERATE decent anti-spyware app). The problem I have with Norton and McAfee is they try to do TOO MUCH. Norton and McAfee both now do basic firewalling (even just the AV app without the security version) and the aggravating thing is that since it's not obvious or easy to tell what it's blocking, the only way you know is when something doesn't work and then good luck figuring out how to fix it.

The real problem I have with McAfee and NAV is their claims that they block spyware. This is as funny as AOL telling you it blocks spyware. I can't tell you how many spyware infected systems I've cleaned that were running NAV.

If you're REALLY concerned about how good an AV app is then why even bother with standard NAV? Their corporate version is a MUCH BETTER APP (although I like McAfee Corporate much better - less resource use and smaller updates).

Anyway, you asked, I told. You being a techie will probably have no major issues - you're smart enough to disable NAV temporarily if you have some wierd OCX issue, and narrow down the culprit.

Let's be frank here - I'm in the business, I can use ANY AV app and not pay for it. I use AVG Free in all my personal systems with the exception of my file server which runs McAfee Corporate edition.

Sorry for butting in here, but why is corporate version much better than the standard version? Why would ANYONE buy the standard if the coporate is better?

I haven't put to much effort in really analyzing the different brands, I just like NAV 2003, and stick with it. But I am open to change.

This is just norton Nav. Their security product is a joke, any one attempt to use the internet after installing that? wont happen.

I have avg on a bunch of systems and they have all be infected. Lost countless pictures. Never using that junk again.

I have to join in with FP here, I have seen countless systems infected with viruses that had NAV that was up to date. But all of the systems I've installed AVG on over the last 3 years have been completely safe with no issues. But to each their own.

On average.. I install 5-10 copies of AVG per week.. have for the last 11 months.. and.. when installed right. set to update and scan.. AVG works.. and works well. and is FREE!.. if nothing else is onthe computer for security.. I say atleast get AVG..

Corporate versions of McAfee & Norton have always been better. They're a completely different product than the home versions.

Why doesn't everyone buy them? They're not cheap.

I've got a REAL big problem with McAfee 2006 lately. Unlike previous versions you can't easily uninstall it. It cannot be uninstalled unless you boot into safe mode and uninstall it from there. Moreover it doesn't tell you that you have to uninstall it from safe mode.

You try to uninstall it and it says "A McAfee Security application is running. Close the application and try again.". Trouble is that you can shut down all McAfee apps in the task bar, and kill all processes and it STILL gives you the same message.

Not a problem for a techie, but can you picture your 70 year old grandmother trying to uninstall this piece of crap? Tell me they don't do it on purpose to make it difficult for you to change AV apps.

That's cheap and crappy.

I use Computer Associates EZ Trust Antivirus, Symantec Corporate 10 on my laptop and also AVG Pro on a desktop. Never been happier. I am with Penguin on this as I get the same type of calls regarding Mcafee and Norton. NAV alone has been getting worse and worse every year it comes out. NAV 2006 is just full of garbage.

Besides, you are just fooling yourself if you think that Antivirus is perfect. They can only detect what they know about. AVG seems to do a better job at this then Norton ever has.

I use Norton AntiVirus Pro 2003, I have always used it. with no trouble. And I use Zone alarm pro with its spyware software built in, along with MS AntiSPy.
SO far I havnt had any issues.
I use AVG on my laptop.

I can say this, back when I worked on PC's everyday and @ Office Depot Norton System works was the biggest pile of Crap I think anyone could put out It would just take controll and before long the people who had it installed would just end up Fing it up themselves by trying to configure it.

Well Ill be damned, Seriously about 30mins after I posted my last reply about me using Norton I DL'd
a prog. and Rackouw! Viruses 9 to me freaking exact. Norton Detected but couldnt remove em.
So I installed AVG free, system scan detected 12! and got rid of them all, to be sure I rescanned and all is well.

Im sold.

Kaspersky. It found virus's that AVG and norton missed. Never failed me yet and even finds a virus in mailwasher and disenfects it. If downloading something and a virus is in it, kaspersky finds it and warns me.
