I had an older Garmin eMap but I wanted color so I recently bought a Garmin Quest from Amazon. Amazon also had the best price for them.

I researched the topic before opting for this one, read reviews too (google reviews). The newer Quest2 is the same unit but has alot of built in memory, enough for all 50 states (no need to ever DL maps) but it's also $200 more. The original Quest holds alot of memory, enough for a couple states but if you need more when traveling, you'ld then need to DL the maps into it via laptop but being that I always bring my laptop anyway, not an issue for me.
You can spend ALOT more money on all sorts of other units so I'd advise researching them, reading reviews, etc before you decide. I wanted one that like my older eMap, is portable too. It can be used on bikes, boats or hiking too whereas the larger costlier units are pretty much "car only" devices.

I have a Garmin III+ and enjoy the heck out of it.
I know there are newer versions and color versions...but this does all I want and when I want more I plug it into my Laptop with MS Streets.

I also have the topo overlays for when I go backpacking. I really like the feature that this one will go portrait (hand held) or landscape (Auto mount).

I use the TomTom software with my Sprint PPC phone and it works great. The 3d perspective is one of the best by far. My understanding is that the TomTom unit uses the exact same software as I use with my phone.

My personal opinion is to get a Dell Axim X51v when they go on sale, then go to semsons.com and order up a bluetooth GPS and TomTom software bundle. This should cost no more (probably less) than the stand alone TomTom unit.
